Christmas Eve...
"Good morning," I heard Chris waking me from dreams. I groaned since it felt that no amount of sleep could make me feel awake after how late the "reception" went to. Then again, I was in my second trimester, so I kind of felt fifty-fifty on the whole energy thing. It depended on the day.
The weariness slowly left my eyes and I said, "Morning. We should probably go check on my parents."
We made quick changes-- I was lazier than usual, so I threw on a bra, underwear, and loose-fitting dress. I went downstairs only to find Chris reading a piece of paper and steaming stack of pancakes.
I asked through the archway quietly, in case my parents were asleep, "Where are they?"
Chris replied bluntly, "They have left us."
"What?" I was nervous and agitated. I thought I did well. My parents actually told me the were proud of me. Why would they retreat?
My boyfriend could read my mind apparently as he said, "Your brain is probably heading to the worst thinking your parents hate you all over again. Untrue. Listen. "Sorry you two, we had some unexpected business in San Diego and are waiting for the Lyft to the airport for a last minute mid-morning flight. We enjoyed meeting Chris and being a part of whatever last night was. Sydney and I are proud to see our daughter successful and happy no matter the circumstances. As you know, we will be in LA more often and I hope we can kindle the relationship with our future son-in-law and rekindle the relationship we have with our talented daughter. Thank you for being wonderful hosts, we will be sending a gift to show our gratitude and we made pancakes. Enjoy. Love, Laura and Sydney Andrews."
I hugged him from behind and exclaimed, "We made it! They love us!"
"That's a relief," he sighed and said, "Let's eat before these get cold."
"These look delicious," I scanned the stack as I grabbed some syrup and butter out of the fridge. "We have to call Liam today to confirm brunch and dinner for tomorrow."
Chris nodded, "Right! I almost forgot because of having your parents here. I'm also used to being in Australia."
"Again, I'm sorry we couldn't plan to do that. I was hoping to meet your parents and friends over the holidays. Instead you met mine."
"It all works out," Chris grabbed two plates and divided the stack evenly, so they each got three pancakes plus some additional blueberries and raspberries. After a couple bites, he stood up and picked his cell phone off the counter. Chris dialed Liam's number and placed the phone at the center of the island on speaker phone.
Liam's voice echoes through our kitchen loud and clear , "Hello, love birds! Merry Christmas Eve. "
"Hey, Little Brother! You are on speaker phone with Erin and me."
"Good morning, Liam," I told him.
"Morning to you, too," was his response. "What's up?"
I asked before Chris could, "We just wanted to confirm that brunch and dinner are still on for tomorrow?"
"Yes," Liam replied. "Is it alright that I am bringing Emma for brunch tomorrow right?"
"Of course!" I exclaimed with a grin.
He was so sweet, "Thanks! She can't come to dinner though because she has to go to HeForShe related activities. Don't ask why, people who want to pursue change must work over the holidays."
"Too true," Chris said. "What you up to this morning?"
"Since it is gorgeous day, I'm heading to the beach to surf. Are you two doing anything today?"
