The stadium erupted in cheers as the final whistle blew. We did it! We won La Liga! The match score of 3-0 gave us the win.
I remember feeling a rush of happiness and excitement surge through me as we all jumped into a pile and celebrated.
That's when all hell broke loose...
People began to crowd the field from the stands, making their way towards us. Everything happened so fast.
I could feel the excitement being replaced with panic as the crowd got larger.
I was no longer hugging my teammates, but instead I was being pulled into a frenzy of fans. Everyone was on a natural high from the victory, they were like animals.
I was pulled in all different directions by my arms, shirt, even my leg at one point. I could feel myself begin to hyperventilate as I was squished between people.
That's when the nausea set in and I became dizzy. Everything was loud as my vision began to swirl and darken.
"Neymar, I've got you." Rafinha came out of nowhere and pulled me to the tunnel.
I spotted Leo hugging Masche and Iniesta hopping on him, while Douglas patted Leo's back. That's when the nausea reached its peak and I began to vomit. I was hunched over near the entrance of the tunnel as Rafinha rubbed my back soothingly. Dani and Douglas came back to check on me while Leo walked off with Iniesta and Masche, smiling.
I felt a pang in my chest as he disappeared around the corner, leaving me. I know he isn't obligated to take care of me, but I still wish he would've shown some concern.
Rafinha pulled me upwards and wrapped an arm around my waist for support. My head began to pound and my legs started wobbling, they gave out moments later. Rafinha tried to hold me up, but he seemed too exhausted from the game, so Dani lifted me bridal style and carried me.
My head dropped back as my body fell limp. I was still conscious, but I felt too weak to move. I didn't have the strength to ask where we were going either.
The loud sounds from the crowd became quieter as we continued walking. As the noise of the crowd faded, the sound of the celebration happening in the locker room became extremely clear. I whimpered as we got closer, partially from the pain it caused my head, but also because I didn't want the team to see me like this, mostly Leo.
Well, part of me didn't want Leo to see me, but the other part wanted him to feel bad for me. I wanted him to worry about me, and ask if I'm alright.
"Neymar, we have to go through the locker room to get to Ramón." I simply whimpered some more in reply.
Dani pressed the door open and began walking through the crowd of players. It quickly quieted down, which I was somewhat thankful for, and I could feel holes burning in me from all the stares.
"Dani, what happened to him?" I could tell they all probably thought I was unconscious.
"Maybe if you guys spent a little more time trying to get to know him, you would've realized he's afraid of being surrounded in large crowds, tight spaces, and it being hot and noisy in those tight spaces. Neymar had a panic attack in the middle of the crowd, and thank God Rafa was there to help him, or he'd probably be on his way to the hospital right now! So, if you'll excuse me, I'd like to get him to Ramón as soon as possible!" If I could've, I would have been thanking Dani endlessly for his words.
The room stayed silent until after we shut the infirmary door, then it was filled with whispers of questions and concern.
"Panic attack?" Ramón's voice rang out from his office area.
"Sí, Rafa got him out before anything serious happened, but he's still not doing too well. He's never been like this though."
"What do you mean?" Ramón questioned.
"He can't move... It's like he's paralyzed. He answers in noises but not words. He can't even open his eyes. I don't know what caused it though." Dani's nervousness was noticeable in his voice.
"Well it's most likely from the mix of emotions, the attack, and the exhaustion from all his running. It's not a good combination, but it can be worn off with some rest. Why don't you go celebrate and Neymar can rest here for a bit. I know you were planning on flying straight home tonight for your wife, so can you ask Leo if he'll take Neymar back to the hotel and watch over him for the night?" Dani gave a short 'yes' and me a kiss on the cheek before he left the room.
Ramón's footsteps walked out of the room and into his office, he shut the door behind him. I had no other choice but to fall asleep, so I did.
---
When I woke up, the first thing I did was sit up and look around. I could tell I was in a hotel room, but it wasn't mine. I knew this because in my room, there were clothes and bags everywhere.
I looked around some more before spotting a small man in the kitchen area of the room. I instantly recognized him as Leo. Panic set in as he was turned around, facing away from me, and humming.
I didn't want to talk to him, not yet, but while I was trying to figure out what to do, he moved so he was standing in front of me with a water bottle in my face.
"Glad to see you're awake Ney." He said gently, as if not to scare me away.
"I- uh... need to leave." I quickly threw the covers off of me and stood up.
I quickly walked to the room door and started undoing the confusing chain lock. As the door began to open, it was slammed shut and I was pulled back into the bedroom by my wrist.
"No Neymar, you need to be supervised until Ramón gets here tomorrow around noon." I gulped.
"O-ok..." I turned away from him and walked back over to the bed I was originally on.
I sat down and opened the water he handed me. I quickly chugged it down, trying to satisfy my thirst. A headache began to form around my eyes and in the center of my forehead. I sighed as I got under the covers and curled into a ball.
I groaned a few times when the headache got worse.
"Ney, are you alright?" I felt Leo's presence next to me as he spoke.
"Yeah... No.... My head hurts Leo." I whined the last part as I pulled the covers off of me.
"I can give you some pain reliever." I shook my head and closed my eyes.
"No, I don't do to well with painkillers..." He nodded and walked back into the kitchen.
About 15 minutes later, I was still whimpering from the intense headache, which had become worse, and shifting in bed.
"You know, my Mother used to lay with me and massaged my head when I got headaches. Believe it or not, it really helps. Do you mind if I help you the way my Mother used to help me?"
"Please, anything to make the pain go away." I whimpered and cried once more.
I felt the bed dip next to me as the covers shifted. Leo pulled the blanket down so he could see my face. He then scooted closer to me until our bodies were touching. He wrapped one arm under my neck and the other around my waist. I was then pulled into his chest and my face went into his neck.
His hand then found my hair and began to run through it soothingly. I sighed in content when the headache began to cease. I breathed in his scent each time I inhaled and it seemed to lull me to sleep. I yawned from exhaustion as Leo continued to rub my head and draw circles under my shirt.
"Go to sleep Ney. You need your rest." I thought I heard Leo call me baby, but I wasn't sure if it was actually him or if I was hallucinating. I decided to let it go as I drifted off to sleep.
----
"He's been sleeping for over 16 hours. He woke up last night, but went back to bed around 9... Yes, I know, but he's missed dinner, breakfast, and now lunch! Not to mention he's probably dehydrated... Ok... Thank you Ramón." I woke up to Leo talking rather loudly to Ramón on the phone.
I didn't open my eyes or move since I still felt exhausted. My arms and legs felt heavy and my eye lids weighed a thousand pounds. The bed dipped down and Leo's hand pressed to my forehead.
"Oh Ney, you're burning up. The doc will be here soon to take a look at you." Leo places a kiss on my head and walked away.
A few minutes later, a knock rang at the door and voices filled the room. I assumed it was Ramón coming to check on me.
"Any signs of consciousness?"
"No." Ramón hummed questioningly.
"I'm gonna start an IV to get him some fluids so he doesn't become dehydrated. As for the food, you'll have to be patient and wait for him to wake up."
"Ok."
A wet wipe was dragged against my inner arm and soon enough a needle broke through my skin.
"There. When he wakes up, takes this out and put this bandage on it. I'll be back around dinner to check again."
"Wait. Should I be worried that he hasn't gotten up yet?"
"No, it's just his bodies way of recovering. He'll be up by tomorrow morning."
"Ok, thank you Ramón"
"Anything for my family."
The door closed and the room grew silent. I laid in bed thinking to myself as I relaxed deeper into the covers. I found myself dozing off in the silence. I assumed Leo left when Ramón did.
---
"You obviously care for him, a lot. I don't buy this friendship bullshit you're trying to play Leo. Just admit you have feelings for him." Pique's voice boomed through the room, startling me.
"It's complicated so just let it go."
"No! I won't just 'let it go' Leo... If you have feelings for Neymar, tell him."
"I can't! He won't feel the same. He doesn't swing 'that way' and you know it."
"Nobody can tell that you're bi Leo. I only know because you told me. The same could go for Neymar. Just talk to him! You won't regret it."
"Fine. Now get out!" Leo grumbled.
I inhaled deeply and began to cough as I shot up from the covers. The coughing fit refused to seize and soon enough I found a bottle of water in front of my face. I took it quickly and chugged it down in seconds.
"T-thanks." I looked up to Leo as he nodded.
I began to itch my right eye while yawning. Leo chuckled and took a seat next to me.
"Tired again Neymar?"
"Yeah, but I can stay awake for now."
Leo grabbed my arm and peeled back the tape that was holding the IV in place. He quickly pulled the IV out of my arm and set it aside. After covering my arm with a bandage, he left to the kitchen.
"What do you want to eat? You've been out for almost 24 hours; you must be starving. Ramón came by a bit ago to check on you a last time before he went to bed." I nodded and replied.
"Can I have some cereal?"
"Of course. Anything for you Ney." He smiled at me before turning away and gathering all the materials for my 'meal'.
He brought me my cereal in a red bowl moments later and took a seat next to me.
"I wanted to ask you something Ney. If you're uncomfortable, just tell me and I'll leave you alone." I nodded for him to continue.
"Over the past year and a half, I've been feeling different in your presence. I become more confident and happier when you're around. At first I thought it was just a because we had great chemistry and you helped me excel in football. Now, I realize, it's because I like you. Not just as a friend, but more. I know this probably disgusts you, but you have the right to know. I'm gonna go now. Thanks for listening." Leo got up to leave, but I quickly grabbed his wrist and pulled him back.
"About time." I whispered and brought his lips to mine.
