Why did this happen to me? What am I being punished for? Is it because I touched Manuel's gloves before a game and didn't tell him, which resulted in a loss. Or is it because I didn't ask Özil before using his card to buy Jonas's late birthday present? I paid him back, but he was still pretty upset.
I contemplated all the things I've done recently to deserve this ankle injury, but I couldn't come up with anything reasonable.
Maybe it's because I don't belong here.
I stared out the window of the hotel room as I let a few tears travel down my face.
The ice on my ankle was now warm water and the pillow under it was flattened. The room I was staying in was large, holding two queen beds, but it felt suffocating. I was alone since the team just finished their game against Armeina. They'd won 6-1 and they would definitely be celebrating for a while.
The anger I felt inside was itching to show itself. I wanted to throw things while screaming and cursing, then I wanted to cry. I wanted to cry for my injury, for my team, for my frustration, I wanted to cry for myself.
The World Cup is right around the corner and I won't be able to play. This damn injury was stopping me from doing what I've been working for since I was a little kid! Now, my dreams were being taken by an injury.
I gripped the pillow under my head with such force, I swore the fabric would rip. I threw it across the room and let out a frustrated groan.
I couldn't get up and walk out on the balcony for fresh air; I didn't have crutches yet. If I wanted to go somewhere, someone had to help me. And as you know, nobody is here. So, I was stuck, alone, in this dark room, waiting for Mario to get back.
The celebrations usually lasted a few hours, so I assumed it'd be late when he got here. Out of boredom, I grew tired and fell asleep.
I only woke up when the beep of the room door sounded and footsteps entered the room. I peeked at the glowing, alarm clock to see it was a bit after 10. The game ended at 9 and it took about 20 minutes to get here, so I knew Mario didn't stay to party. For some reason, that made me smile and feel giddy.
"Marco?" Mario's soft voice rang out as a whisper.
"Hmm?" I hummed tiredly.
"I'm sorry." He sounded regretful.
"You know it's not your fault Mario." I sighed.
"I'm sorry." He whispered again as he approached the bed. I rolled towards him and smiled sadly.
Pulling the blankets back, I patted the spot next to me. Mario instantly climbed in beside me and covered us up with the comforter.
We stared at each other in silence for a minute or so before I spoke up.
"What did I do to deserve this?"
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"I must have done something wrong." Mario giggled while shaking his head.
"You didn't do anything. It was an accident Marco. Accidents happen." I looked down at my limp hand that was lying between Mario and me.
The silence began to swallow us again, before Mario gripped my hand.
I looked up in surprise, and found Mario staring at me with worry.
"You could never do something bad enough to deserve this. Believe me." He sounded sure.
"How do you know?"
"Because I know you better than anyone." He smiled.
A light smile took over my face and I snaked my arms around him. The tears from earlier made their way back to the surface and fell from my eyes. Mario didn't say anything as I cried in his arms.
"I love you so much Mario. Maybe more than I should, but I don't care. You're the best thing in my life right now, and I'll always feel this way about you. Thank you." I grasped his face in my hands and brought his forehead to mine.
"I love you too Marco." He whispered softly as we laid together, nose to nose.
"Kiss me?" I asked with a small smile.
Mario leaned in and connected his soft lips to mine.
When we pulled apart, my eyes closed and I rested in the crook of Mario's neck. I placed a soft kiss there before pulling back.
"You better win this World Cup for me." I smiled.
"I will. I promise." My heart fluttered at how sure he sounded.
I fell asleep, buried in his arms with our limbs tangled, a large smile taking over my face.
