Nearly a week had passed with nothing new happening. It seemed far too calm for it to be any good. Las Blaugranas knew that it was just a matter of time before someone tried something.
With the death of Allegri looming over the prison, everything was tense. No one started fights in the lunch room, no one started arguments in the court yard, no one breathed a word of misconduct. All underground trades halted and everyone held their breath when the guards were around.
During the shooting incident a week prior, two inmates lost their lives and another was injured. The halls would no longer see Modrić or Kovačić and it would be a while before they saw Rakitić.
The death of inmates wasn't necessarily rare, but a death was caused by a guard, that was practically unheard of. So it was no wonder everyone wanted nothing more than to lay low for a while and allow things to cool off. The guards were posted everywhere with large sticks up their rears, at least that's what Neymar thought.
Neymar climbed out of his shared bunk and placed his bare pads onto the cool floor. Leo was tucked away in the window sill working away at a file, Kun's investigation report. He had been set on finding everyone involved in Kun's death. He didn't care that Allegri was already dead, that was just a start, he needed to know who actually did the killing while Allegri harassed Neymar.
Leo only glanced up at Neymar for a moment before returning to his work. Neymar knew how important it was for Leo to get justice for Kun. The courts wouldn't do it. The investigation wasn't thorough, the guards didn't care enough to make it that way, so the only way justice would be served was if Las Blaugranas took it into their own hands.
"I'm going to hang out with Luis in the Library before work Leo." Neymar made sure not to speak too loudly, not wanting to disturb Leo's train of thought more than necessary.
"Be careful please." That was all Leo said before he turned his attention to the file once more.
Neymar walked by Masche on his way out of the cell, giving him a slight nod before heading down the vacant hallway towards the Library where Luis was waiting for him.
Going to the library had become a daily thing with Luis. It gave the two time together without being crammed in a packed cell and it allowed them to relax and escape the prison through their imaginations. Reading was a favorite pastime of Neymar's and at that moment it was one of his only pastimes.
Neymar entered the library to find only a few inmates inside. James Rodriguez sat at a table in the far corner, his nose shoved in a Harry Potter novel. To Neymar's right sat Toni Kroos, a piece of paper before him as he wrote a letter, probably sending it back home to family.
Neymar spotted Luis in their usual spot, pressed against the wall in a bean bag chair, an open one beside him, reading War and Peace as he had been the whole week. Neymar didn't understand how he could read such a long, intricate book. Neymar picked up his usual on the way over to Luis, Charlotte's Web. It was something his mother had read to him hundreds of time and that he had read twice already that week. He never got tired of the book. It brought a nostalgic feeling over him as he flipped through the pages.
"Sleep in late?" Luis looked up from his novel as Neymar approached.
"Yeah. The storm last night kept me up." Neymar plopped down in the other bean bag chair.
"It lulled me to sleep like a baby." Luis snickered as he repositioned himself in the chair.
"How was Leo this morning? Any different?" Luis questioned.
"No. He was reading through the same file again, as if something will just jump out at him. As if there is something he hasn't seen yet. I feel terribly." Neymar laid the book down in his lap as his gaze fell to the floor for a moment.
"I wish there was something we could do." Luis sighed and Neymar nodded in agreement.
"Why doesn't he just ask around? See if anyone saw anything?" Neymar asked.
"Are you serious? Leo would sooner drop the whole case than ask for help. No one here snitches. Plus, how do you think Leo would look asking for help?" Luis shook his head.
"Well... what if I ask around? Maybe I can find some information." Neymar tried to convince himself it'd be a good idea.
"Neymar no. That's too dangerous. You ask the wrong person and you're in trouble. Just let Leo handle it." Luis dismissed Neymar's idea and turned back to his book.
Neymar tried to do the same, read his book, but he couldn't stop thinking about Leo. About how bad he felt that Leo spent countless hours everyday trying to solve Kun's case. Trying to catch Kun's murderer. Neymar had only caused problems for Leo and Las Blaugranas so far and he wanted to help them, just once. Kun was important to all of them that and Neymar knew that.
After about an hour of reading, Neymar set his book down and turned to Luis.
"I'm gonna head to work early." Luis only nodded before turning back to his book.
Neymar's steps were quick as he made his way to the washroom. He knew he could count on one person being there, waiting to annoy him, and that was Dani. Sure enough, when Neymar entered the room, Dani was already perched on one of the tables messing around with some linens.
"Ah Neymar. You're early." Dani placed his linens down and stared at the Brazilian.
"Yeah, I was actually hoping to see you." Neymar did his best not to gag at the thought of Dani feeling excited that Neymar was hoping to see him.
"Oh. And what could you want from me?" Dani smiled eerily as he became interested.
"I know you have a lot of connections here. I need a favor." Neymar swallowed nervously as Dani jumped down from the table.
"Well, you do know that favors aren't free around here, right?" Dani smirked.
"Yes I'm aware." Neymar crossed his arms and scuffed his feet nervously.
"What is it that you want?" Dani was curious.
"I need information on Kun's death." Dani's eyes seemed to widen in surprise.
"And why would you need that?" Dani slowly approached Neymar, as if a predator stalking his prey.
"Because I want to know who killed Kun." Neymar tried his best to keep his voice calm and composed.
"Well that'll cost you and I think you know what I want." Dani smiles sickly as he stood in front of Neymar.
"First, I need you to promise you know anything about Kun's death that we don't already know." Neymar knew a promise wouldn't mean much coming from a criminal like Dani, but he had to hope Dani could keep his word.
"You know promises mean nothing inside these cinderblock walls. How can you be so sure I'll keep my word?" Dani's calloused hand reached out to brush along Neymar's cheek, causing Neymar to take a step back.
"Because if you don't I'll make up some crazy lie to tell Leo. I'll tell him you cornered me, gave me no choice, how I feel used and disgusting, how I can't stand to see you in these halls ever again for what it would remind me of. And if I know Leo as well as I think I do, you'd be dead by morning light." It was Neymar's turn to smile sickly.
Dani visibly swallowed and looked down for a moment, as if contemplating whether or not to make a deal with the Devil.
"Alright. Let's go to the back." Dani turned on his heel and led the way to the back of the laundry room, where no one could see them.
Neymar took a deep breath, not wanting to change his mind at the last minute. Not wanting to fail Leo. He was committed to solving this crime, to bring a sense of closure to Leo and the rest of his friends, even if that meant losing some of his innocence to a scum like Dani.
Clearing his mind, Neymar took a step forward to follow Dani, surely etching his fate in stone.
