*~*~*~*
Alec stood between our father and I as the three of us watched Magnus install new wards around the Institute, finding ourselves needing them after last night. A Forsaken had managed to get past our wards to attack Hodge and Alec, having had angel blood injected into it to allow it to slip past our wards without being detected.
"Are the wards solid now?" Dad questioned Magnus. "Nothing will get through?"
"Even my magic has limits." Magnus shook his head. "The wards won't hold off that Forsaken attack. But my protections will slow them down."
"Extra time is priceless." Dad sighed, taking what he could get.
"No, say that after you get my bill." Magnus smirked.
"Lydia and Joseph will take care of that." Dad assured him before he walked away, leaving Alec, Magnus, and I alone.
"A Forsaken wound often needs a little warlock TLC." Magnus commented, eying the bandage wrapped around Alec's arm. "May I? Uh, free of charge."
"It's okay. I'm fine." Alec shook his head.
"If anything were to happen to you," Magnus glanced at me as he spoke to Alec, clearly knowing how upset I would be if something were to happen to Alec. If Hodge hadn't been there to help Alec last night, I didn't want to begin to think about how differently things could have turned out.
"Magnus, I'm good." Alec assured the warlock as he started to walk away, following after our father.
"Don't take it personally." I told Magnus as we both watched my brother's retreating figure. "He's always been rough around the edges, only gets worse with age, at least, that's what Isabelle has told me."
"I could help you." He glanced down at my hands, seeing the cuts and bruises on my knuckles from my lengthy workout last night, having failed to wear gloves to protect my hands. "No charge, of course."
"I think I'll pass." I turned his offer down. "A few cuts here and there are no big deal. Mundanes deal with it all the time."
"But you are not a mundane." He pointed out.
"Yeah, I'm not." I sighed. "I gotta-"
"Go?" He finished for me. "Of course. You're a busy woman. And I should find these Joseph and Lydia people. Payment upfront is just smart business. Where might I find them?"
"Haven't seen them." I shrugged, telling the truth. Ever since last night I had been avoiding the blonde duo as though they were the plague, not wanting to have to deal with them. "Just keep an eye out for two blondes that look like they have poles shoved up their asses, that'll be them."
"Right, thank you." He chuckled as I spotted a man being led into the control room.
"Meliorn?" I saw Isabelle jump up from her seat. I didn't hesitate to walk away from Magnus to follow after my sister, realizing that the man must be the Seelie that she had been dating until recently. "What are you doing here?"
"The Clave called me in for some kind of conference." Meliorn informed my sister as I reached her side.
"I'm so happy to see you." Isabelle smiled at him.
"Spare me." He rolled his eyes at her. "Your fire message clearly stated you never wanted to see me again."
"My family-" Isabelle tried to explain.
"Despises Downworlders?" Meliorn guessed. "That's common knowledge."
"That's not true." Isabelle shook her head. "And even if it were, I'm not like that."
