"Could I be someone Matt could fall for?" Guess whispered to herself. They'd arrived in Japan at 10 o'clock local time. Despite the many rooms in the building, Guess and Robin shared a room opposite Matt and Mello's also shared room. The 4 of them weren't allowed to go any higher into the building as directly above was the headquarters of the investigation L was heading. After she'd unpacked, Guess lay down on her bed and pondered on what she felt for Matt; after Mello's revelations, she didn't know what to think. What were her feelings for him? What were his feelings for her? What should she do about it, if anything at all? There was a hurricane of thoughts rushing through her head, and they wouldn't stop.
"Maybe, I'd say so." Guess jumped a little, Robin had come up to her in her daze and heard what she said.
"Wh- what?" Guess asked, trying not to appear startled.
"I think I have some explaining to do..." Robin sat down on her bed and thought. "Well, let me start from the beginning: I joined Wammy's House a couple of years before you did. My brother used to come here too, but he ran away after his friend committed suicide. Anyway, I'll explain more about that later, but after I joined, I didn't really know what to do so Lust approached me and I started hanging out with her. I never really enjoyed her company, we usually spoke about Matt or whatever else she found important. I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't even know my name; I only ever listened to her, I never spoke about my interests, what I liked... I've had enough of it. Of not being myself and feeling so lonely... You know what, if I'm going to be myself, I need to not hide anything anymore." She got up and walked to the mirror, her back to Guess; she removed her glasses and pulled out a contact lens from her right eye. Beneath it, she was hiding a pure white eye with a small dot in the centre, her pupil. Guess didn't know what to say as she looked at Robin's reflection. Robin looked at Guess through the mirror. "I'll explain how I got this later. Oh, but it's so good to finally show someone this. I hope I'm not freaking you out too much, am I?" Guess slowly shook her head. "Good," Robin smiled as she pulled her black hair into a ponytail, her full fringe covering her forehead. After, she turned back to Guess. "I know how out of the blue this is, but I hope you wouldn't mind if I join you three, do you? Then I feel like I owe them an explanation, so that's when I'll spill the whole story."
Guess nodded, "Sure, I don't see why not," she smiled, still a little unsure about the whole situation in her head.
There was a knock on the door. "Girls, are you ready to see L? Afterwards, you shall be having lunch," Watari said.
"Okay," Guess replied as she got up from her bed and opened the door, Robin close behind. Watari gave a warm smile before calling for the boys.
Watari led the four of them to a room, much like a living room, with a coffee table in the centre and sofas surrounding it. The blinds were drawn, blocking out the sun. The sofa arrangement seemed to have one at the head of the coffee table so the four children avoided it. There were six spaces in total; one sofa for three opposite then head sofa and two singles on either side of it. Mello, Matt, and Guess sat on the sofa for three and Robin sat on the single nearest to Guess. Watari checked his watch. "L will be seeing you, now," he announced and left the room through the door they just came through. The room was silent apart from the slight shuffling of feet. After an uncomfortable silence, the door at the other side of the room began to open.
"I apologise for keeping you waiting. Matsuda was causing trouble again..." A tall man stood in the doorway, although, from his hunched posture, one could assume that he was taller. He had messy, raven black hair that was carelessly thrown to the side and dark bags under his eyes were made very prominent against his pale skin. He wore some baggy, blue jeans and a baggy, white, long-sleeved top. He sighed and made his way to the head of the coffee table with a thumb prodding his lip. He crouched down on the chair, bringing is knees to his chest and rested his hands on them wriggling his bare feet around. With that, Watari came in with a small slice of cake and a fork and placed it in front of L. "Thank you," L said almost monotonously. He picked up the fork with his thumb and forefinger and examined the 4 children. "It looks like Near isn't here to join us," he concluded.
"Near suffered a small accident before we left so Roger decided it would be best that he didn't join us this time." Guess, Matt and Mello shared in a collective glance, smirking at each other, and looking back to L. The corner of L's lips turned up slightly, it felt like, from that simple exchange, that L knew what had happened and the exact events that had taken place as though he'd been there with them. "We have a newcomer to our usual top five this year, this is Guess." Watari introduced her.
"Welcome, Guess. I congratulate you on getting into the top 5 so quickly after joining." L smiled.
"Thanks," Guess said timidly.
"Robin, you look different from when I last saw you."
"Thought it was time for a change, you know," she answered. Guess thought about how long she must have been in the top five to be able to speak to L so casually. 'How did I get here?' she thought. Mello began drumming his fingers on the end of the sofa and tapping his foot slightly. L recognised Mello's chocolate withdrawal symptoms and quickly asked Watari to fetch him some chocolate. When he returned, L got down to what he'd been meaning to talk about.
"I am currently leading an investigation on the mass murderer, Kira. It's become quite a worldwide issue, so I believe you must be familiar with the case?" Robin and Mello nodded and Guess wiggled her hand a little. Matt just shook his head. L smiled. "Still playing video games I see then, Matt?"
"Yeah," he smirked, "but I did find someone to play them with me, at least." He nudged Guess as he spoke. L glanced at the two of them and just nodded slightly, quickly understanding what was going on between the two of them. Mello caught on and chuckled, Matt and Guess oblivious.
"Well, it seems Mello will have to fill you in later. But as I said, I am conducting the investigation and feel that we are close to the conclusion... Though, I'm not sure on what kind of conclusion. To find and arrest Kira, I may end up dead. I'm already putting my life on the line; I might not survive to see the case solved and the world returned to justice. But whoever succeeds me will continue the investigation and that will be one of you. I'm not sure I can choose at the moment so I'm going to wait, if I don't decide before my death, the current first and second of Wammy's House can choose between themselves who will inherit the name of L or work together. If it comes down to it, it will be one of you and it's not too far in the future if worst comes to worst and push comes to shove. One of you will punish Kira for his crimes... There is a 78% chance that this case will be the death of me so I want you to be ready for it." There was shock written on all of their faces, who the hell was the Kira guy if he could defeat the best detective the world has ever seen? "Now, enough with all the seriousness, I'm sure you all want to some of Japan before you leave in the morning so Watari will be taking you for a drive around and I've given each of you 15500 Yen (about £100 or $130) to buy a little something as a memoir. Go and enjoy yourselves," L smiled. Without much else they could say, the 4 of them bid their farewells to the detective and wished him the best. Matt was last to leave the room. "Oh, Matt," L called. Matt turned back to L. "Good luck on your mission, I'm 100% certain you'll complete it with the exact results you hoped for." L gave a childish smirk and when Matt turned back around to leave, he had a huge smile on his bright red face.
"What was that?" Guess asked.
"Don't worry about it," he replied.
