"Strafe! Strafe! No, not that way! Shit, shit, shit!" Guess leant from side to side pretending to dodge her enemy in real life with her character. As she came closer to defeating the boss, Matt walked in, "You're finally awake," she greeted not taking her eyes off the screen.
Matt chuckled, "Yeah, Mello asked me to go do some spying."
"Wait up, I'm coming with you!" She paused her game and jumped up from the sofa.
"No, Guess."
"What? Why not?"
"It's dangerous."
"So you mean you could get killed?" she panicked.
"There is a small but existing possibility. Which is why you'll be staying here," Matt concluded.
"But-" Guess argued.
"No buts," he said decisively.
"You could die, Matt!"
"Yeah... If you could, though, would you mind grabbing my PSP before they throw my corpse into the incinerator?" Matt joked.
Guess glared at him, "What the hell? Don't joke about your life like that!"
"It's not like my life affects the big scheme of things."
Guess stared up at him completely speechless, "Do you honestly not get it yet?" Her voice suddenly changed, sounding harsh as opposed to overwhelmed like it did before.
"What?" Matt asked, genuinely confused.
"Let me put it into perspective for you, then: if you die, it's not only your life that ends!" Her voice got louder as the sentence went on and when she stopped the room was silent. Feeling herself come close to tears, she snatched her iPod from the table by the door and grabbed her keys, bursting out the door and slamming it shut behind her without another word. Matt stood motionless in the room, unsure of what to do. Guess practically ran from the building, with no direction in mind, shoving her earphones in furiously. 'Idiot! Does he really not understand?' she mentally cursed. Pulling her hood up, she felt little streams of warm water trickled down her cheeks as she kept her head down and blasted full volume music into her ears, trying to walk off her anger.Every time Guess thought about going home, she couldn't seem to force herself to begin walking in the right direction. She'd left at about 10 in the morning and only found herself unlocking the door at 9 in the evening. Matt was sat on the sofa, he wasn't playing anything, just staring into space. When he heard the door creak open, he snapped out of his daze and looked over at her. It had been raining hard since 7 and Guess had refused to go home until she had walked 6 and a half hours away, she was completely soaked.
"Oh my God, Guess! You're absolutely soaked, why didn't you come home sooner?" Matt jumped up to help her but before he could reach her, she put a hand softly on his chest to stop him.
"I can't talk to you right now... Sorry." She didn't look up at him, she avoided looking at him, though the rain would have hidden any tears that would have come if she did see his face. When he didn't say anything, she walked past him and headed towards their room. Grabbing a towel and fresh clothes, she went to the bathroom to take a shower.
After her shower, she left the bathroom, walking straight past Matt through the living room and to the kitchen to put her drenched clothes into the wash. Walking past him again, he was sat on the sofa watching her, he took a hold of her hand. "Guess, please, can we talk?" All that could be heard was the washing machine churning in the background. Without her confirmation or rejection, he decided to just talk. "I'm sorry, I'm a complete idiot for saying that. I don't know why I didn't realise that you'd suffer the exact same as I would if you were to die and I'll never talk about my life so lightly again."
"But you still went," Guess said quietly, unmoving.
"I was extra careful because of what you said, I promise you, they didn't see me, let alone know what I was doing." Matt looked up at her, eyes glistening, afraid to lose her because of his stupid mistake.
She waited a moment, thinking. Taking a deep breath, she turned to look at him, "Matt-" Just as she'd suspected, looking at him forced tears from her eyes. Closing her eyes tightly, she looked away, covering her mouth and letting the salt-water fall. Matt stood up and wrapped his arms around her tightly and she cried into his chest. "Matt, I-I just d-don't want to lose you. It would kill m-me if you were to get hurt," she sobbed, attempting to keep her voice stable but not succeeding.
"I'm sorry, Guess. I should have known better, I'm an idiot." Matt began to feel himself get a little choked up but refused to let it show. Still, he held her tight and they stood there together for a while. As Guess's crying faded, she looked up at him. He wiped the tears from her cheeks. "Do you forgive me?" Guess just nodded and wrapped her arms around his chest. "I don't know how you put up with me," he joked.
"Me neither," Guess said quietly. Matt chuckled.
