It was around 12 when Matt and Guess decided to go downstairs to get some lunch. Matt poked his head around the corner of his room to check on Mello before they left. "We're going to do down and get some lunch, okay? I'll bring something up for you." There was no response from the room so Matt closed the door and turned to Guess sadly. "He doesn't talk to me anymore, just lies there staring at the ceiling... He mumbles still nothing occasionally but that's about it.
Guess felt guilty, "Poor Mello... I'm sorry."
"What for?"
"Making you have to look after the two of us, I should have been stronger," she said as she looked down.
Matt took her hand, "You have nothing to apologise for. You're here to help me now so that doesn't matter," he smiled.
She looked up at him and smiled in return as they head down to the lunch hall.
"What do you want? I'll grab it for you and you go save us a table," Matt offered. Guess told him what she wanted and thanked him as she began to walk to a table.
"Oh, well would you look at who's back." A girl approached the table.
Guess glanced up, "What do you want, Lust?"
"I'm just wondering what it is you did to drive Robin out like that," she purred evilly. Suddenly, Guess felt herself get filled with rage and shot up from her seat nearly causing it to fall behind her.
"I did nothing, I don't know why she left," she growled.
"Sure you didn't," Lust replied calmly, "I don't believe that for a second but if you are telling the truth you look like even worse of a friend; if she were with me, I would have known every detail for her reason to leave."
"No, you wouldn't! You wouldn't have a clue! You were never a good friend to her."
"And so what? You were? When you don't have the faintest why she ran away?" Lust laughed, attracting some attention from a few of the people nearby.
Guess swallowed down her anger and urge to scream, she didn't want this day to be ruined. "I never said that - still, I feel like I could have done a better job, but one thing I am certain of; you weren't the friend that Robin needed."
Lust let out a snobbish laugh, "You think that but then she runs away in your care?! She loved me and I listened to her whenever she needed me to." She emphasised 'listened' as she spoke, looking at Guess smugly to see the amount of emotion she was bringing out.
"Then why did she leave you in the first place?!" Guess cried, pushed over boiling point. The room became silent and almost all eyes were drawn to the two girls. The silence was suddenly broken and their staredown interrupted by Matt putting his and Guess's lunch down on the table. He sighed and stared at Lust, irritated.
Her eyes lit up, oblivious to his stare, "Hey, Matty-" she tried to take his hand.
"Oh my God!" Matt said loudly, but not quite shouting, as he threw his left arm up into the air, dismissing her greeting and avoiding her touch. "Don't you get it?" His voice suddenly became deeper and calmer. It scared Lust a little. Guess had never seen this side of him. "I don't like you, nor have I ever liked you and I could never like you! You're the opposite to what I like..." His voice softened, "To who I like." He smiled slightly as he glanced over at Guess. "You have no care for others, you're self-centered and a blatant liar. I could go on but I don't want to waste my time."
Tears welled up in Lust's eyes, "M-Matt, you don't mean that-"
"How are you here?" Matt sighed as he pinched the bridge of his nose. "How are you here when you're so ignorant? Maybe actions speak louder than words for you..." He took a hold of Guess's hand and lifted it up, intertwined with his, to show her. "Understand yet?"
Lust searched desperately for a comeback. "O-oh, yeah? W-well..." she scanned the room some more before getting an idea. She took a hold of one of her friend's hands. "I can do that to a friend! That doesn't prove anything!" She still managed a smile despite her eyes looking hopeless. Guess looked to Matt to see what he would say next. He just smirked.
"You make a good point," he said simply, "So let me offer you a better example - would you do this?" Letting go of Guess's hand, he put his hand on her waist, pulling her into him, and his other hand went to her cheek, planting a deep and passionate kiss on her lips. Guess was shocked at first but soon giggled into the kiss and kissed him back, placing her hands on his chest, holding his stripy top. Lust just stared at the two of them, eyes wide. When Matt pulled away, he looked into Guess's brown eyes smiling. Then they both turned to Lust to see her reaction. It wasn't long until she ran out of the room. It was only then that Matt and Guess realised almost everyone else in the room was staring at them with looks of admiration or congratulations. Almost in unison, they pulled away from each other. Matt scratched the back of his neck and chuckled awkwardly, looking at Guess and then sitting down at the table. They both began to eat their lunch.
"Well everyone in Wammy's House knows about us now," Guess whispered, the room still too quiet to speak at a normal volume and not be heard.
"Pretty much, yeah," Matt whispered back, blushing like Guess was.
When they finished their lunch, Matt grabbed a chocolate chip brioche roll for Mello and a bottle of water and headed upstairs. Slowly, Matt pushed the door open followed by Guess. "Mello, I got you some lunch and someone's here to see you." There was no reaction from anywhere in the room. The room had been completely drained of emotion, Mello's mourning had escalated past sadness to nothingness. Guess felt sorry not only for Mello but for Matt too. He looked after Mello in the almost suffocating aura. Mello looked like a different person, his skin was far too pale and he was really slim. He just stared at the ceiling above.
"Mello..." Guess said quietly in shock as she approached the bed. Mello's eyes searched the room for but his body didn't move. Guess could tell from his eyes that he was surprised to see her but any other emotion was invisible. "Matt helped me get better, will you let us help you?" He didn't react, only blinking in agreement. Guess smiled sympathetically, "Come on then, sit up. We'll spoon feed you if we have to!" she said quietly again. Gradually, Mello peeled his fingers apart from his chest and stiffly sat up. Matt sat next to him, dangling his legs off the edge of the bed like Guess. Matt twisted off the lid from the bottle of water.
Mello took it from him and after a couple of sips tried to clear his throat. "Th-" he coughed, "Thank you," he said, his voice raspy. The both of them just smiled at him. Something about Guess's recovery sparked something in Mello, driving him to be himself again. If Guess could get better, then why couldn't he? With the only two people in the world that he cared about left by his side, nothing could get in his way. Was he not Mello after all?'Nothing shall overcome me.'
'I shall be the best.'
'I shall be first.'
