It was an early Wednesday morning, also Matt's 16th birthday, when someone knocked on his door. Thinking it was Guess, he didn't respond, knowing that she'd come in anyway and he could pretend to be sleepy - even though he always perked up a least a little when he saw her - and pull her into bed with him. Instead, though, whoever was at the door knocked again. Matt groaned and checked his clock, it was 7am, way before Guess even attempts to wake up on a normal day. The person knocked a third time, pushing Matt's already grumpy morning mood over the limit.
"Okay, okay!" he said groggily as he got up and opened the door. He was surprised to see Roger standing there.
"Happy birthday, Matt," he greeted rather monotonously for what he was saying.
"Since when do you give out happy birthday greetings?" Matt asked sarcastically, rubbing the sleep from his eyes with his finger.
"Since it's your 16th birthday," he replied bluntly, "Come with me, we have things to discuss."
"Wait," Matt said before Roger could start walking away, "One sec." Matt walked back into his room and scribbled down a note on a piece of paper and left it on his bed. Then he left the room, closing the door behind him and following Roger to his office.
"Well, you're 16 now, so you now have the choice to leave Wammy's House and you also have the right to your inheritance. Without Mello to claim his share from being second, I've split his between you and Guess. I imagine that's what he would have wanted. Mello managed to hide all of his money right under my nose for the occasion that he might have to leave early. If you don't want to leave yet that's fine, from the strict guidelines I've been given, I can allow you to stay until you're 18, like I said a couple of years ago. It's completely your choice."
"I'm staying," he replied automatically. "I thought about it before and either way, it didn't take long to reach a decision. I'm going to wait for Guess and we will both leave some time in September after her 16th birthday. I'm going to start looking for apartments in September so I'll take my inheritance then."
Roger nodded, "Okay, I'm glad you had this all planned out. saves a lot of discussions. Is there anything else I can do for you, Matt?" He shook his head, "Then you may leave, happy birthday again, Matt."
"Thanks," he said as he got up and left the room. When he opened the door to his room, he saw Guess sitting on his bed looking intently at the door. She held the little piece of paper in her hand tightly and breathed a sigh of relief when she saw him. "Good morning, you're up early," Matt smiled.
Guess got up and wrapped her arms around him, he could feel her heart beat was faster than usual. "Happy birthday!"
Matt put two fingers under her chin, lifting her head up, he looked at her sadly, "You didn't think I left without you, did you?" Guess's eyes just darted around the room avoiding him.
"I- I didn't think about it before... but with the note and being up so early..." she admitted quietly.
"I would have gotten slapped if I said that," Matt teased. Guess rolled her eyes and pouted. "And do you really think I would have left you hanging like that? I said I would be back and for you to wait here for me!"
"Sorry, my mind just jumped to the worst case scenario," she apologised.
He kissed her lips lightly, "It's okay," moving his hand to the back of her head, he pulled her into a tight embrace. "I told Roger that I was going to wait for you, I'm going to start searching for apartments in September. Also, because Mello left before he could claim his inheritance, Roger split his between us."
"Looks like we won't be needing a job anytime soon after we leave, huh?" Guess giggled.
"Certainly sounds like it," Matt chuckled. Guess pulled away from the embrace and yawned, "Still tired?"
"Worrying takes up a lot of energy, you know," she joked. Matt laughed as he took her by the hand, pulling her into bed. She snuggled up into the crook of his neck.
"Let's just stay here all day," Matt suggested, closing his eyes.
"I'm going to assume sleeping isn't the only thing on the agenda if that's the case," Guess teased, looking up at him.
He looked at her with one eye smiling, "It is my birthday!" he excused.
"You should know I'd do it if it were your birthday or not," she hinted.
Matt laughed, "I'll keep that in mind."
Guess rolled her eyes, "Oh, just go to sleep, you!"
