Asher's POV
I hadn't left the hospital since I hit her.
What if she doesn't wake up? Will I have to tell her parents? She's so perfect, how many people have I just devastated. She's got her whole life ahead of her. I knew today was going to be bad before I even got out of bed . . . In fact, I should have just listened to myself and not gotten out of bed. See what happens when you don't listen to your own conscience? Nothing good.
If she died, I could never forgive myself.
I could feel myself drifting off . . .
When I opened my eyes, Nathan was standing in front of me. I didn't know what to do, or think . . . I just sat there with my jaw hanging open, and my eyes about to pop out of my skull.
Nathan saw this and laughed, "Sorry bro, not acually here. I admit this is a little cruel, but it is the only way I could think of to tell you---"
I found my voice, "Tell me what? Am I dreaming? Is this all in my head, or are you actually here?" I was stunned, how was this even possible. I missed him so much. My eyes started to tear up
"You are asleep, but it is me, not your sub-conscious' version of me . . . but I need to talk to you, and we have to do it before she wakes up."
"Before who wakes up?" I ask, confused.
"Her," Nathan says, pointing to the girl on the hospital bed.
"What about her, is she going to die? Are you here to lead her to the other side? Nathan, I can't have killed someone . . . especially not there, not where---"
"No," he cuts me off, "Nothing like that . . . Asher, she's the one."
"What one?" I ask genuinely confused.
"The one for you. You always said you would trust me to find your girl because of the whole connection thing, and because of my judge of character. And I did."
"What?" I ask, "Nathan, how do you even know her? I hit her with a car, I don't even know her . . . "
And I certainly won't if she dies. Oh God, please let her live, I couldn't possibly handle it.
He looked at me and smirked. "You will now."
He took my hand in both of his, and I felt a flood of memories. Nathan bumping her with the car, conversations at the hospital, her parents, comforting her.
That was all it took. Nathan was right. It felt too soon to say it, but . . . I knew I loved Samantha Reed.
I sure didn't deserve my brother. He gave me one last gift.
Then I opened my eyes to the sweetest voice I had ever heard.
"Nathan?"
