Samantha's POV
That was a lot to process.
Nathan is dead? How do I know him then . . . I couldn't have imagined all that . . . could I?
Asher was still looking into my eyes, probably waiting for a response I didn't have at the moment.
". . . How . . ." I was floored. I honestly didn't know what to think anymore.
"How," I tried again, "is that possible? I met Nathan . . . I talked to him; are you telling me I imagined all of that?" I just looked at Asher, uncomprehending.
"No," he said sternly, "you didn't imagine any of that, and don't let anyone make you believe you did. If you imagined that, then I imagined what just happened too . . ." He said quietly, reverting his eyes to the floor.
"What just happened?" I asked cautiously. Too much was happening too fast. I was on my guard from here until I decided I could trust this man . . . I put my trust in his brother, and he apparently isn't even alive. I think I am a terrible judge of character. I can't even choose who to trust reliably.
"I saw Nathan too." He said
He saw him too? That has to mean I'm not crazy. What are the odds of us both seeing his dead brother?
"I was asleep, but I know he was there," he said determindly. "If he wasn't really there, he wouldn't have been able to show me---" he stopped abruptly.
"Wouldn't have been able to show you what?" I asked slowly.
He wouldn't meet my eyes. "You," he said.
Me? What does that mean? Why is this guy so cryptic . . . he should just tell me what's going on.
"What do you mean Asher? And I'm not kidding around . . . you need to just tell me. Do you think I'm not going to believe you? Because my story is pretty crazy too. We sound like a couple of lunatics in a poorly written story."
"I never thought about it like that," he said quietly. He came over, and sat down on the edge of my bed. I didn't know whether to be uncomfortable or happy that he wasn't repulsed by me. "Last night, I saw Nathan for the first time in a year . . . He told me about you, Sam." He looked up at me hesitantly.
Alright, I don't think I told him my name . . . that's probably why he was so hesitant before. He probably thinks this is going to scare me, but I am too confused to care.
"Go on," I prodded.
He flashed a look of relief and continued, "At first, I thought you were going to die, and he was there to lead you to the other side . . . but then he told me-- he told me you were 'the one'. Naturally I was confused, so I told him I didn't even know you . . ." he looked straight into my eyes, and for a moment I felt like he was looking straight into my soul -- cliche, I know, bad choice of words -- "Sam, he showed me everything. Everything that happened when you were with him . . . somehow he gave those memories to me. I hope more than anything in the world that you will be able to trust me like you trusted him, because Sam, quite frankly I think I---"
