Samantha's POV

When I woke up, I was confused.

Wasn't I just talking to Nathan?

When I opened my eyes, I realized I was in a hospital... Why? I did not know. Looking around, I saw Nathan sleeping in a chair.

"Nathan?"

He opened his eyes, and shot out of his chair.

"Oh my . . ." I gasped, because I realized this man wasn't Nathan at all. Nathan had brown eyes; this man had only one brown eye, but he also had one brilliant, ocean blue eye. I was stunned.

"You're not Nathan," I said quietly, eyes wide.

His eyes had the same deep concern and understanding Nathan's had. "No, I'm not," he said quietly. He looked up at me.

"I'm Asher."

Why does that sound familiar? Isn't that who Nathan was talking to the doctor about? The one he said I was for? Whatever that means...

"You look confused," he said, "and you should be. I will explain what I understand, but that really isn't much."

He looked to me for approval, but I seemed to have lost my ability to speak, so he went on. "I better start from the beginning, before you even came into the picture. You see, a year ago -- today actually -- my brother and I were riding in our car when a drunk driver crossed the center line and hit us. I was hospitalized for months, but my brother wasn't so lucky . . . He died on impact." He looked up at me sadly. "That was Nathan, and he died in the same place I hit you with my car."

I just sat there, eyes bugging out of my head, and gulping like a fish out of water, trying to think of something to say.

Asher continued on with his story. "You can't even begin to imagine how I felt when I hit you; the same exact place I had seen my brother die just a year before. Nathan and I were as close as possible, but that isn't really hard to imagine; most twins are. At one point, I swore that the only person I would trust to play matchmaker for me was him because we were twins, and because he was always the best judge of character . . ."

He seemed to come out of his reverie, and met my eyes.

"And he picked you, Sam."

A/N

This chapter is dedicated to my friend Leah who told me she wasn't going to speak to me until I finished the book. The book isn't finished, but an update will have to for now.

Question of the chapter:

What is your favorite movie?

I don't think I've asked this one yet. My current favorite is Just Like Heaven, but I did just watch Pride and Prejudice today, and that was pretty good too.
