We all walked out of the dim subway station, to the bright and colourful world. Our team count was back to 12. We were all happy to be back together. But then I realized, only S.T.E.A.L could have given them B-13 and if S.T.E.A.L and the Legion are working together we will need a bigger team. We needed more kids to help us.
"Blain?" I asked, "Where do you go when you get scared?"
"I don't get scared, dude. Why?"
"No no, if you were scared where would you go? Or if your parents were missing were would you go?" I asked
He had a weird expression on his face. He thought and thought as he drifed away.
"Blain?" I put my hand on his shoulder
He instantly woke from his daydream or trance and answered.
"I would go to the zoo, or my house, or a grocery store." he said
"Why?" I asked
"Because that's where my adoptive parents would bring me most."
I understood why he was in a trace. When I asked about his parents, he didn't know. He probably didn't know anything about them. He was stuck answering his own questions, let alone mine.
"Then let's go to the Zoo!" I said
"Why?" Ayden asked
"Because we need more group members." I said
"Well it could be differnent for each kid, since each kid has a different lifestyle." Leah said
"I know, but we need to start somewhere. Were not going to a grocery store or knocking on every single door." I said
"No," Rose said, " But I have a better idea. How about we split up into two groups. One will go and get any kids at the zoo and the other will go to the TV station and make a message to all the kids at home or the grocery stores or anyone watching TV!"
I hated the idea of spliting up again but, we needed group members, since S.T.E.A.L's army was growning fast.
"Okay," I sighed, "Blain, Rose, Leah, Sydney and I will go to the zoo, the rest will go to the TV station. Ayden, you're in charge of the group since you have leading experience. We will meet up back here at the end of the day before sunset."
"Okay." he said confidently
We split up and started walking away from each other. I slowed down to the back of the group to check on Sydney.
"Hey." I said
She didn't answer.
"I know this is a little shocking..." I said
"Shocking!" she cried out, "This is crazy! One day I'm having fun, the next I'm in New York saving the world from zombies!"
I let her blow up in my face for the next five minutes, not taking any of it personaly. I found that sometimes it's better to listen. I listened to her rage and anger, taking pitty on her and when she stopped there was a long pause. I let her breath and let it sink in.
"I'm with a bunch of strangers doing crazy things." she sighed, "Wouldn't you be like me?"
I didn't answer her question. I changed the topic instead.
"Do you think of John? Because if he was here right now he would probably say..."
"Don't give up, keep going, I'll always be with you."
"Wow, you sound just like him!" she said to me
"Guess again." a voice said followed by static
"John?" she asked into her communicator, "That was really corny. You couldn't say something else?"
"Sorry, I was just listening on your converstation and thought it would be funny."
"Jonny! What's up?" I asked
"First off, don't call me Jonny. I have gotten through hell just to get communications." he said
"What do you mean?" I asked
"I had to drive out of the city, full of Grown-Ups, find a lost plane, secure it, and build, put up, and sync a five meter intena on the roof of the plane. I will be communicating while my partner cleans up and scavanges the plane."
I knew something was wrong. He used partner instead of partners.
"Hey, what happened to the other guy?"
"We lost him..."
There was a long silence.
"Our car broke down halfway to the plane. We fought off as many as we could, but there was too many. He coninced me to lour the zombies away, but I wouldn't alow it. He did it anyway and saved us."
There was static.
"I'll be here if you need me." he said
And before we could say anything, he hung up. I sighed and Sydney lowered her head. The group wasn't to far ahead. I was about to run to catch up, when I heard footsteps trail behind me. I turned my head just so I could see him. I pulled out my bow and had my arrow in place. I had one big question that prevented me from talking.
Was this character a friend or foe?
