he sat on his couch, and turned the tv on. the volume was high, but seemed to be muffled by the sounds of his own thoughts. they screamed, blurring everything else out. he knew that jihoon had to be protected at this point, but he didn't know how he would do so.
becoming friends with jihoon was probably the best idea he had came up with. it was something that would make his concerns seem ordinary, and it would mean that he would be around him a lot more often.
others would have been confused by the thought of seokmin becoming protective over jihoon so suddenly, but it was who he was. plus, jihoon reminded him of himself in some sort of way.
before he knew it, he'd found himself thinking over the topic for a half hour. he knew he had to get started on his homework, but something was stopping him from doing so. he pushed the feeling that had been churning in his gut aside, and got his materials out.
the feeling wouldn't leave him alone, and would only get worse. the lingering sensation on the tips of his fingers drastically increased as he jolted his notes on his notebook, making them shake vigorously. he wanted to think that everything was fine, but he knew that it wasn't.
he wanted his mom to pop into the living room at that moment, and tell him to not worry. he wanted to hear those exact words come out of her mouth, letting him know that everything was okay.
unfortunately, she hadn't been home.
he had been left alone in the house, and it made him frightened at times, the feeling of loneliness being beyond than familiar to him. he hoped that he'd eventually learn how to deal with it, but for now, it was hard for him.
seokmin only felt worse when he heard a faint thump on the door. he wondered if someone was waiting at the door for him. he felt paralyzed, as if something was telling him to stop. the knocking continued him, causing him to become paranoid.
he sighed with relief once he heard his best friend's voice call out his name. soonyoung opened the door himself, and saw seokmin's state. he knew that something was off, and knew what he had to do.
"i didn't forget about the hidden key," soonyoung explained. "do you want to play mario kart with me for a bit?"
seokmin nodded with a stoic face, feeling confused by the whole situation. he wanted to tell himself that he was okay, but knew that that wasn't the case. it would only be lying to himself, which broke the biggest rule that he went by.
soonyoung walked over and turned the tv on, grabbing the controls and throwing one at seokmin. due to his state, he was too spaced out to catch it.
soonyoung cursed himself out when he realized that he had hit seokmin in the head with the control. he quickly got a towel and dabbed it with water, running over to aid him.
seokmin acted as if it hadn't been a big deal, and just let soonyoung help. afterwards, he pressed the button so that they would start playing the wii.
the title screen for mario kart glowed in the living room, the words standing out compared to everything else. seokmin and soonyoung cheered, letting out a loud screech. they would get overly excited over the game, and the neighbors would complain. however, they'd gotten used to it, and felt a sense of warmth whenever they'd hear the two best friends get hyped over mario kart.
however, there was only one person who'd hated it. it was the neighborhood's least favorite grump, miss lee. she was jihoon's mother, and was known for being overly strict and uptight.
seokmin played as donkey kong, while soonyoung played as yoshi. they were racing against each other on rainbow road, and became intense. seokmin was right behind soonyoung, only to push him to be ahead of him. soonyoung was about to fight back, the both of them becoming especially loud. they were close to the end, but came to a halt once they heard a knocking on the door.
they paused the game, and opened it.
"can you please be quiet?" miss lee spoke with an agitated tone. "there's people who have something important to do, and you're distracting them! if you're going to play that stupid racing game, then don't shout about it so that the entire world can hear you."
seokmin nodded, and sat down with a sense of guilt. he felt bad; he'd been annoying people and disturbing them. playing mario kart calmed him down, but if it was a bother to others, then he wouldn't do it.
"we can't play anymore, soonyoung," seokmin muttered, heading to his room. "you should leave now."
soonyoung watched as seokmin's eyes teared up, the glistening of them sticking in his mind. he tried to interfere, but only failed.
"i told you to leave, soonyoung."
soonyoung nodded, and left his house. he would be mad, but he knew that seokmin needed to be alone.
he only wished for the best towards seokmin, and prayed that the witch he knew as miss lee would leave the neighborhood and leave seokmin alone. everyone else knew about his current situation, why couldn't she understand it as well?
he exhaled with anger, and stomped to the lee's house. the dim light outside would usually creep him out, but he ignored it. he just wanted seokmin to be okay.
he knocked on the door, only to see jihoon open the door.
"what is it?" jihoon sighed.
"where's your mom?" soonyoung asked.
he barged into the house, and slammed the door. "if she's going to be a total bitch to seokmin, i'm going to have major problems with her. she needs a reminder, she's not the only person with connections. either way, my family already beats all of your connections."
jihoon only nodded slightly, standing in the living room with soonyoung. he felt concerned for seokmin, knowing that soonyoung wouldn't confront anyone for a silly matter. he'd never seen him this mad either.
"ji-"
miss lee halted as soon as she saw soonyoung standing in her living room. "what did i tell you about bringing low class scums into the house?"
soonyoung walked up to her, and scoffed. "you don't know what you got yourself into, miss lee. don't ever disrupt seokmin and degrade him because of your lowlife ass."
