"So this is where you go during lunch?" Patrick looked around the empty football field before sitting in the grass beside Andy.
"Yeah." He nodded. "The school lunch isn't entirely vegan friendly. So I don't even bother going in there."
Patrick nodded his understanding.
They sat in silence for a few minutes. Patrick kept looking around the field. Afraid one of the players would come out and catch them. Andy kept his eyes on Patrick. Waiting for the nervous boy to make eye contact with him.
"Stop staring at me." Patrick kept his eyes on the bleachers in the distance as he spoke.
"Are we seriously not going to talk about this?"
"Talk about what?"
"You having sex with one of the most popular guys in school."
"I'd rather not-"
"I didn't even know you were gay!"
"Andy-" he sighed. So they were going to talk about it anyway then.
"I want details."
"There's nothing to tell."
"Bullshit."
"It's a private matter. And no offense, but it doesn't concern you."
"It totally concerns me."
"Why is that?"
"Because I'm your new best friend and best friends tell each other everything."
Patrick couldn't help but smile. He had an actual best friend. He'd never had a friend at all. Not since he started high school. Somebody he could talk to about anything. He'd never had that. Maybe he should take Andy up on his offer and talk about Friday night. There was a lot he needed to get off of his chest. He just wasn't sure he could do that without crying.
"I suppose you're right. But-"
"Also it's totally my business because you two did it on my bed. I had to burn the sheets!"
"You're lying!" Patrick's cheeks flushed a bright red.
"I am not. How could you not notice?"
"I was a little drunk."
"And in the morning?"
"I was just trying to get the hell out of there as quickly as possible. I didn't pay any attention to my surroundings."
"Did you hit and quit Pete Wentz? Holy shit. Patrick Stump, you are the man!"
"That's not exactly how it happened."
"And it must have been a good one night stand because he was waiting for you this morning."
"Could we not go there?"
"What did he say?"
"He said he was looking for me all weekend. And that he wasn't friends with the popular crowd anymore."
"That's it?" Andy seemed disappointed. Like he'd been expecting a proposal or something. So Patrick added,
"He asked for my phone number."
That did the trick. Andy was grinning ear to ear again. A weird expression was taking over his eyes.
"Has he texted you yet?"
"I didn't give it to him."
"So not only did you one night stand him, you also refused to give him your number?"
"It sounds terrible when you say it like that."
"I don't think there's anyway to make that sound nice."
"No, I suppose there isn't." Patrick admitted after trying to think of one.
"I don't get it." Andy stared at his best friend with wide eyes. "Don't you think he's hot?"
"How could I not?"
"So you don't like him then?"
"Of course I like him."
"I don't understand!" He threw his hands in the air before lying on his back in the grass.
Patrick laid down beside him. "He doesn't like me."
"Of course he likes you." Andy turned his head to look at him. "Why else would he look for you all weekend? Why else would he be waiting for you by your locker just to ask for your number?"
Patrick was too embarrassed to tell Andy the full story. About how Pete only had sex with him because of a bet. Instead he just shrugged at Andy's questions.
"Well, I think he likes you." Andy continued. "Every time I picked you up from class Friday, he was staring at you. And he even got rid of his dickhead friends for you. Didn't you say that? That they weren't his friends anymore?"
"Yeah. That's what he said at the party."
"Well I think he likes you. I know he likes you. And I think you should give him a chance."
"I'll think about it." He lied.
