As time passed, Rose and Marni grew closer and closer, but there was still something off with Rose. As they grew ever closer, more lies were told to protect how Rose and Marni did meet. They could tell the guards were getting suspicious as well.
“Beka, I’m home!” Marni called. It was a Wednesday afternoon and blazing hot outside. Marni walked into the kitchen to grab some water before walking through to the lounge to find Beka being questioned by 2 guards. “Oh. Hello.” She stated, shocked.
“Ma’am” One of the guards replied. This was the first time she had ever heard a guard speak, and she was shocked to find herself partially mesmerized by the smoothness in his voice. ‘That must be why no-one ever resisted arrest’ thought Marni. The guard turned back to Beka, who was sat with deliberate calmness. It was clear the voice trick wasn’t working on her.
‘Heya Sweets!’ She heard in her head. Beka again, obviously. They’d been practicing this recently. ‘Don’t fall for his voice. He’s asking about witchcraft’
‘Okey dokey!’ Marni replied.
Bekas’ attention moved back to the guard, and continued talking to him as he started to get angry that his trick wasn’t working with either Beka or Marni.
“So, Miss…” The guard trailed off looking at Marni for a name.
“Just call me Marni” She supplied.
“Miss Marni, what do you know about witchcraft?” Marni thought for a minute before answering.
“Not much, I’m afraid. Um, in all honestly I don’t even know if it’s real…” Marni trailed off. She hated lying, but knew it was necessary.
“What about your guardians ‘club’” He asked.
‘Just say you don’t really go, you just listen to music and read through out the meetings’ Marni heard. Thank God for magic.
“I just sit in the corner and read and listen to my music, sorry” The guard nodded and stood up.
“We’ll show ourselves out.” He said. Beka smiled and stood.
“Of course. Are you sure you wouldn’t like anything to eat or drink? Maybe for the road? I just cooked some cookies!” Beka asked politely.
“Why not?” The guard replied. “Thank you!”
“No problem. Goodbye now. Safe journey.” Beka said, handing them each 2 cookies. “Enjoy!” She closed the door, sealing the soundproof house. “Good Lord, I thought they’d never leave.”
“What were in those cookies, Beka? You hate baking.” Marni asked.
“A little something I cooked up. Their minds will erase anything that was wrong with that interview and replace it with whatever needed to be said to prove our innocence. Genius, right!” Beka explained. Marni nodded before walking back into the kitchen.
“My turn to cook tonight?” She asked. ‘Yup’ she heard through her mind. “Okey dokey then.” She got to work cooking.
“So why were Bill and Bob here?” Marni asked, curious.
“You know curiosity killed the cat, right? And I presume you mean the guards.” Marni shrugged and nodded. “Apparently, there have been some suspicious people hanging around recently, and they seem to think that they are witches looking to pull the rulers down. Somehow I doubt their story though.”
“Fairsnuff. Do you want tomato and cheese sauce with this?” Marni asked.
