Jenna crawled on the ground trying to search for any tell tale signs of last night. Directly under the window of the den was a huge prickly rose bush making it impossible for anyone to stand. Besides, the soil under the bush looked smooth and undisturbed. Frustrated, Jenna kept looking around hoping to find at least a spot of blood that was flowing in abundance last night but to no avail.

Jenna had woken up that morning to find herself sleeping comfortably on the den couch with the tv playing softly in the background tuned to the same channel as the previous night. The events of last night had rushed back to her mind but when she asked her parents, both denied the power ever going off. Richard had even suggested that the stress and sorrow of the last few months was probably catching up with her and she must be having nightmares. She was very sure that the events of the previous night were not caused by any nightmare and that was what had led her to search around her garden hoping to find some sort of clue.

She finally gave up and went back indoors. Pat and Richard were leaving to Bedhill to begin setting up their clinic. Jenna headed to her room to freshen up and again found her balcony doors wide open.

“This is getting really annoying,” she muttered to herself. Rummaging around in her drawer, she found the biggest lock that she possessed and locked the doors shut.

After freshening up, Jenna decided to call Michelle. She scrolled through her phone searching for her number and hit the call button. The phone rang twice before someone answered it.

“Michelle?”

“Jenna! Hey! So glad you called. What’s up?” There was heavy distortion coming through the line and Jenna could barely hear a word that was being said.

“Nothing much. Are you busy? I just called to see how you were doing and if you wanted to meet up sometime for lunch or something.”

“I am heading towards Bedhill right now. We could meet in about an hour’s time if that’s okay with you?”

“Yup. Where do we meet? I remember you saying that you weren’t too comfortable meeting in the town.”

“Ummm.. If you could give me directions to where you’re staying, I could just drop by there.”

“Hey! That’s great idea!” and after directing Michelle to her house, they hung up.

Jenna decided that since she had almost an hour before Michelle got there, she would cook some lunch for the two of them. Rummaging around her kitchen, she decided to make a chicken lasagne along with a fresh salad.

Once the lasagne was in the oven, she decided to get started on the salad. She washed some fresh tomatoes, lettuce leaves, potatoes and mushrooms  and sat down at the table to chop them all up. She picked up one of the tomatoes marvelling at how fresh and juicy it looked and slid the knife into it. The moment she slit it open, she noticed that the entire tomato was black and rotten on the inside. She pushed it to the side and started cutting open another one. Before she could even cut it halfway, black, fat maggots started crawling out from the inside.
