Jenna pushed her sun glasses off her face as she took in the scenery around her. The smell of fresh air hit her nostrils and the wind whipped her dark hair around her face. A childlike giggle escaped from her lips as she turned to smile at her parents. The Smiths’ looked at their only child and smiled.
Their decision to move across the country was not an easy one. It was based more on necessity rather than convenience. At 25, Jenna had been left at the altar – twice and both times by the same man. One would think that she learnt her lesson the first time round but no! Our little Jenna was so wrapped up in her own world of imaginative bliss that she failed to see what everyone else knew: their relationship was doomed from the start. Paul had her twisted around his little finger for three years. When he finally popped the questions, people raised their brows in surprise. Maybe, just maybe the town’s bad boy had some good hidden in him.
But alas, some habits are just too hard to change. Jenna stood at the altar dressed in her Vera Wang wedding gown, the perfect picture of what every woman wanted to look like and what every man wanted his woman to look like. But Paul was nowhere to be seen. The next day, he was found fallen at one of the local watering holes, too drunk to remember that he had missed his own wedding the previous night. Despite everyone warning her, Jenna with her big heart and blinded eyes, forgave him almost immediately. Their relationship continued for another 7 months and this time round, the scene at the altar was not very different. The only difference lay in the fact that instead of being found at a watering hole, he was found lying at the steps of the town brothel, shirtless and reeking with the smell of alcohol.
Jenna was heartbroken. She quit her job, stopped going out and stayed locked up in her bedroom day in and day out. She cried herself dry, barely ate any food and let herself wither away. One day her mother found her lying unconscious in her bath tub with an empty bottle that once contained pills strewn on the floor. She rushed her to the hospital and while Jenna’s stomach was being pumped out, her parents decided that it was time to take matters into their hands. They concluded that the only way to help Jenna to get back on track was for her to start afresh in a completely new locality, one that wasn’t tainted by any past memories.
Their decision to move to the country side was filled with apprehension but now watching Jenna look happier than she had in months, they felt happiness tugging at their hearts.
Jenna’s dad, Richard, pulled up their car at the gate of their new home. It was the clichéd dream home that everyone dreamt of. The two storey house was surrounded by a picket fenced garden on all four sides. Inside the rooms were spacious and well decorated. Jenna carried her bags to her new room upstairs. She opened the door and paused, a small smile on her face. The room itself was huge and it opened out onto a large balcony which over looked the backyard. The branches of an apple tree brushed against the railings and the sound of chirping birds greeted her ears.
Looking around, she couldn’t help but feel that this was just what she needed. It was perfect!
But was it too perfect to be true? Only time would tell!
