Tyler found Jenna sitting inside the car. She looked rattled.

“Hey!” he said as he slid into the driver’s seat. “Want to talk about it?”

Jenna just shook her head and continued to stare ahead in silence. Tyler pulled the car out from their parking spot and began heading back to Bedhill.

“Why did he have to come back?”

“Who was he?”

“How did he find me?” continued Jenna. “I thought it was over. Why is he here? Why?”

“Jen, I don’t know what just happened back there but the only way for you to get any answers is for you to talk to him.”

“No. That will never happen.”

“Ok. But this is his number,” said Tyler as he placed a piece of paper in her hand. “He gave it to me and said that he really wanted to speak with you and that he was really sorry for whatever happened.”

She gazed down at the paper. Paul. Why was he here? Did she want to know? Did she want to speak to him again?

No.

Yes.

Maybe.

Jenna was walking down a long, winding road. It was dark and everything looked unfamiliar. The street lights illuminated the empty road ahead. Either side was dark. Too dark.

She hurried along. She had to reach home soon. She was hungry and tired. She hadn’t eaten anything. Why was she walking? Where was she? She racked her brain but couldn’t remember a thing.

Maybe she should call her dad. She felt her pockets but couldn’t find her phone anywhere. In the distance, she heard a howl. She started running faster.

The road suddenly ended in front of her. It just dropped into the blackness of the night. Where was she to go now?

“Nooo!” she yelled aloud. But who was going to hear her?

She decided to turn right. Surely that was the correct direction. Hesitating, she finally entered what seemed to be a thick cluster of trees. As she went in deeper, she noticed a path widening out and alongside there were more street lights.

She let out a small shout of joy. She would soon be home. She ran faster.

She heard the howl again. It sounded closer this time. She heard a twig snap close by.

“Who is there?”

Silence.

She ploughed forward. She felt a sharp pain run up her leg. Looking down, she saw a shard of glass sticking out from under her right foot and a small pool of blood was slowly gathering on the ground. It hurt.

Where were her shoes? Wasn’t she wearing them today? They must have fallen off while running. Right?

Blood.

Blood.. What if the howling beast could smell it?

She ran faster. The pain in her foot increasing with every step. She slowed down. She couldn’t do this anymore. She was tired, frightened and limping.

With a bang, the light above her went off. One by one, each bulb burst. Until it was just her and the darkness. And the sounds of the creatures of the night.

She began hobbling along in what she thought was the right direction. Twigs snapped louder.

And then she saw him. He was standing under a tree. It was dark, but she knew it was him. He would help her.

“Paul!”

“Jenna!”

“Paul, I am lost. Please take me home.”

He looked at her. And she noticed his face for the first time that night. His pupils were dilated. His eyes were blacker than the night. He looked different. He looked scary.

She stepped back.

“Where are you going Jenny? Don’t you want to stay with me? I will keep you safe.” He let out a hideous laugh. It sent chills down her spine.

She turned and started running.

He followed.

He yelled out for her to stop. She ran as fast as her injured legs would carry her. Low branches hit her face. Stones poked her bare feet. She never stopped.

She felt him closer behind her. If he stretched his hand, he would touch her. She stopped and turned.

He stopped and stared at her.

“What do you want Paul?”

“I want you Jenna.”

She heard a twig snap towards her right. She saw a shadow move towards her.

“Paul. Please help me. There is someone chasing me. Please help me.”

Paul stared at her. And then he slowly began to disappear.

“Paulllllll!” she screamed.

What was happening?

“You left me Jenna. I can’t help you.”

And then the place where he once stood was now empty.

No time to figure out what happened. The rustling on her right grew louder. She turned and started running again.

Something was chasing her. She could hear its footsteps. She could hear it breathe.

She tried to run faster. A cold chill filled the air all around her.

“Jenna....”

An eerie whisper floated through the night.

“You can run as fast as you want. But I will always catch you. The time is slowly nearing Jenna.”

In her fright she tripped over a stone and fall flat on to the ground. Jenna rolled over to face her follower.

There was no human.

There was no animal.

There was a black shadow. Shapeless. Formless. Faceless.

It cackled with glee. And launched itself at her.

Jenna felt a cold liquid like feeling pass through her body. She began coughing violently and then she saw a beast fly out from the darkness and head straight at her face. She screamed.

Jenna woke up in fright. She looked around her. She was at home. In her bed. She had been dreaming!

She got up to drink water and then she realised something.

If it was a dream, why were her hands and feet caked with dirt and blood?
