Michelle sat at the edge of a cliff and stared down at the water below. Its stillness was eerily calming. Past memories kept rushing into her head.
The anger, the pain, the rejection, the betrayal.. It still hurt as if it were just yesterday. She would never forgive them for what they did to her. The suppression.. the confinement ..
Paul had been staying with Tyler for the past few days. After Tyler’s mom, May had realised that he was homeless, she had insisted that he come stay with them. Things between him and Tyler were tense. He knew that Tyler knew what he had done to Jenna and he knew that Tyler hated him. And yet a common worry for Jenna had led them to form a weird sort of camaraderie with each other.
Right now he was alone at the Burke’s residence. The house was ominously silent. He couldn’t stop thinking about the past few days ever since he arrived at Bedhill. Something was drastically wrong with this place. The things happening around here were just not normal and it frustrated him to no end that he had no idea what was wrong. He couldn’t help but feel that whatever had happened so far was just the tip of the iceberg and that there was a lot more to come. He shuddered at the thought.
“I will go meet Jenna tomorrow, no matter what.”
Jenna sat on her bed and stared around her. Her room had become her haven and her prison at the same time. She felt safe and yet she felt trapped. Her balcony doors were still padlocked and she didn’t dare open them. The air in her room felt thick with fear and suffocating silence.
She was so worried about her mother. After that incident, Pat had neither cooked any food nor moved out of her room. Whenever she placed her ear against her mom’s door or called out to her, she was met with deathly silence. She was frightened. She had no idea what to do. Tears started rolling down her cheeks and she wiped them away in frustration.
“Daddy, why did you have to leave us and go away?” she sobbed quietly. “At least when you were here, I knew nothing would go wrong and now I am lost. Everything is falling apart slowly and it’s all my fault. If we hadn’t come here, none of this would have ever happened and you would still be here with us.”
Jenna slowly pulled herself off the bed and made her way downstairs. She went to the kitchen to find something to eat. As she rummaged around the shelves, she noticed that the back door was slightly open. Clearly remembering that she had locked it, she went to shut it. Just as she was closing the door, she noticed a figure out in the backyard.
Pushing the door open, she peered out and realised that it was her mom sitting huddled up with her back facing the house. Seeing Pat, she rushed to her in relief.
“Mom!” she yelled and ran up to her and placed an arm on her shoulder.
She recoiled back in shock. The face that turned to greet her only resembled her mother but her once lively eyes were now vacant and hollow. Her lovely blonde hair fell matted on to her shoulders and her once radiant skin was now pale and withdrawn. Jenna noticed bruises around Pat’s eyes and mouth and there was a faint trickle of blood from her nose.
Gently she sat down next to her mother and put both arms around her frail body and enveloped her into a tight embrace.
“What happened mom?” she asked fearing the worst.
“Jenna,” Pat whispered in a hoarse voice, “I am sorry.”
“Sorry for what? Please tell me what happened,” Jenna begged.
“I failed you. I tried but it is strong Jenna. It took away your father and now it’s my time. I really tried but I failed you.”
“Who is strong? Mom what are you saying? Please tell me what are you talking about, please’” begged Jenna.
“Jenna, I’m sor......”
Jenna watched in horror as her mother began to violently cough blood out on herself. The air suddenly felt extremely cold and a shiver passed through Jenna’s entire body.
Fearfully, she watched her mom’s hands and legs start bending in abnormal angles.
“You stupid bitch”, a voice snarled from her mother’s body, “This all your fault.”
Pat bent over on all fours with limbs at awkward angles. Her head twisted right around and she stared straight at Jenna. Right then Jenna knew that was not her mother anymore and she stepped back in fear. It spat a green slimy liquid on Jenna and ran towards the house.
Jenna felt around her pockets and realised that her phone was inside the house. She needed to contact someone soon. Terrified she ran towards her back door.
Slowly, she entered the house. It was pitch dark. She tried switching on the lights but none of them came on. Frightened, she felt around the drawers till she found a candle and some matches.
Striking the match on, she lit the candle and peered around the room. It seemed to be empty. She suddenly noticed a trail of blood on the floor. She began to follow it. The house was deathly silent. The only sound that she could hear was the loud thumping of her frightened heart.
She entered the hall and stood still trying to listen for any sound. She heard a faint scraping coming from the basement stairs. Without thinking, she started making her way towards the sound.
The pool of blood at the basement door was enormous. The only thought running through her head was that she needed to save her mother. The stupid girl didn’t realise that it was herself that she needed to save!
Jenna made her way down the basement steps, grabbing a log of wood she found at the entrance to protect herself. Once she reached the bottom, her candle light threw at her, the most horrifying scene a daughter could ever see.
Pat’s naked body.. Limbs spread out.. She was nailed to the wall. Blood dripped from her hands and feet. There was a gaping hole in her stomach..
Her mother.. Dead.. Tortured and dead. Pinned to the wall like a human poster.
Across the wall in red were the words – YOUR TIME IS COMING.
