Chapter Thirteen

Jenna rushed to the bathroom and opened the tap and started splashing water on her face. She washed her hands and feet as best as she could and then applied some antiseptic on the cuts, wincing every time it stung her.

She stared at herself in the mirror. The face that looked back at her seemed alien. Her skin looked pale. Her eyes looked tired and she had dark circles under both eyes. Her usually glossy hair hung limp till her shoulders.

She continued staring at herself and then she finally broke down on the bathroom floor and started crying.

 Everything finally catching up to her, she felt defeated and broken.

Richard finished piling the last of the bags into the boot of the car. It was his and Pat’s thirtieth wedding anniversary tomorrow and he had planned a small getaway for just the two of them. He had booked a room at a quaint little bed and breakfast about two hours away and after the past few months, they really needed this break.

After he had seen Jenna lying pale and unconscious in the hospital bed all those months ago while the pills were being pumped out of her stomach, he had been devastated. Deciding to move all the way here was not easy but he knew that it was the only thing to do to save his daughter.

And now seeing her freaking out the past few weeks, he was beginning to get worried again. Maybe once he and Pat got back, he would contact a psychiatrist to have a look at Jenna.

He was worried. Pat and Jenna were the two most important people in his life and he would do everything that he could to protect them.

There was this nagging feeling at the back of his mind, poking him, as if trying to warn him about something but he couldn’t figure out what it was. He decided to let it be for now and pressed the car horn to let his wife know that it was time for them to leave.

Jenna and Pat walked out of the door together laughing at something that one of them had just said. Richard couldn’t help smiling at how similar both of them looked. As they drew closer, for the first time in days, he noticed that Jenna didn’t look well.

“Jen, are you feeling okay?” he asked her.

“I’m fine dad. Just didn’t get enough sleep last night, that’s all. Are you excited about your weekend away? I know mom is!”

“Of course I am!” he replied. “But honey, if you aren’t feeling well, we can always cancel and go next week. I don’t want to leave you alone if you are ill.”

“Pfft! I am fine!! You two lovebirds go enjoy your break and have as much fun as you’ll can. I love you guys so much!”

After hugging them, Jenna waved until the car was out of sight. With a sigh she went back indoors and plopped down on the couch. She could feel the beginnings of a headache and knew that today was going to be a long, long day.

She heard her phone ringing upstairs. Groaning, she pulled herself up and went to her room. When she saw who was calling, she smiled and answered the call.

“Michelle! How are you?”

“Hey Jenna! I’m doing great. How are things with you?”

“Going okay. When did you get back?”

“Last night. I wanted to call you then but figured that you might have been sleeping. You got any plans today or do you want to meet up?”

Jenna hesitated. She had been looking forward to a quiet weekend alone.

“Well, I am a little busy right now but will be free at about 4.30. Is that okay?”

“4.30 is perfect. I want to take you to some place that is really special to me. I’ll text you the address.”

“Great! See you later!” and Jenna hung up.

Michelle smiled as she flipped her phone shut. She couldn’t wait to meet Jenna in the evening. She really had missed her these past few days.
