British Bird
Chapter Four
SangI must be seeing things because what I'm seeing in front of me surely can not be real. My eyes flick from one face to the other and I notice their wide eyes. I'm sure mine mirrors theirs. They haven't changed; still the same guys I remember in appearance, just older, not so much a boy but more a man. I open my mouth to say something, anything but I can't get any words out.
My eyes settle on a pair of steel grey ones, framed with his signature black rimmed glasses. I notice the grey suit and maroon tie. Nothing about him has changed.
I've dreamed of this moment so many times, the moment I would come face to face with them again and each time it always ended with us having a group hug with huge smiles but for the life of me I can't move. I'm frozen.
My heart is doing crazy things in my chest; the thump thump is completely out of rhythm. The notepad and pen starts shaking with my hands and I feel a little dizzy. I wobble on my feet and a hand wraps around my arm to steady me. I look up and my breath catches when my eyes meet dark brown ones. "North," I whisper.
I blink, shaking my head. "I don't understand." I close my eyes, dragging in a deep breath before slowly letting it out. I think I need a minute. "Ex-excuse me," I stutter as I pull free from North's gentle grip and turn around.
My knees are weak and I'm surprised I can carry myself towards the staff room. My head spins and I blink, shaking my head as I try to focus my vision. Adam's face comes swimming into view and I feel his hands come and rest on my shoulder. His mouth is moving, but I can't hear his words. The room starts spinning so fast, it turns my stomach and the next thing I know, I'm falling and everything goes black.
Flashback – Thirteen Years Old
"Sang Honey, come and get ready for bed while the boys sort the den out for tonight," Cara calls down the basement stairs.
After playing Truth or Dare, Nathan tried to teach me how to play pool. I'm no good at it and ended up just picking the ball up and putting it in the pocket. I called got a cheat. I laughed. Afterward, Uncle called us up for dinner. He lit the BBQ and we had burgers and hotdogs for dinner with salad and new baby potatoes. Then we returned to the den and put on a movie.
The guys did start listing off some movies for us to watch but I hadn't heard of any of them before. I'm not really a movie person, more of a book one. I go to the library often, always taking out books and returning them within a few days so I can get some more. Before this trip, I had just finished the last Harry Potter. When I remembered that they were movies, I asked if they had them. Turned out they had the ones that had been released on DVD so I asked if we could watch the first one.
And that's what we've been doing for the last three and a half hours. We had just put on the second movie and I already love them, but I love the books more.
"I'll be back in a little while." I get up from the sofa. Nathan drops his legs down from the coffee table so I can get by and I send him a smile of thanks and start for the stairs.
"We'll pause the movie, Sang," Luke calls.
"Okay. Thank you," I say, looking up the stairs from the bottom. The lights are still on so I start up them, my hand wrapped around the rail. I slowly start going up them and when I reach the top, I push open the door.
I'm just about to close the door when a voice says, "So, do you guys like her? I think she's pretty cool. Pretty and cool," Luke says and a smile starts tugging at the corner of my lips.
