British Bird
Chapter Twenty Three
Sang

Sean and Mr Blackbourne are waiting for me, when myself and Evie walk out of college. We make our way over to them, and once again Evie is mumbling about how 'American's have good genes'. "You know, Sang," she says in a whisper, "if you ever go back with them..." she trails of as she focuses her dark navy blue eyes on me. "...take me with you."

The admission surprises me. I want to ask why she would want to do that, but before I ever have a chance too, we're coming to a stop in front of Sean and Mr Blackbourne. "Good evening, ladies," Sean says. He focuses his eyes on Evie. "Would you like a ride to pick up your daughter?"

Evie beams, knocking into my shoulder with barely contained excitement. "Oh, if you wouldn't mind, Sean. That would be fantastic."

"It would be our pleasure," he says, opening the door for the backseat. Evie climbs in and scoots over while I stay standing on the path.

"Where is everyone?" I ask.

"It will only be us tonight, Sang. The others have gone back to our hotel rooms for the night," Mr Blackbourne says.

"Much to their displeasure," Sean adds with a grin.

"You still have your hotel rooms?" I ask, my eyebrows rising.

They don't answer my question but they do share a look with each other. They had told me they had nowhere else to go. I shake my head and get into the backseat of the car next to Evie, dropping my bag to the floor at my feet. Mr Blackbourne gets into the driver's seat and Sean gets into the passenger seat.

The ride to drop Evie off at the nursery is silent, and once we have dropped her off, it's still quiet. I'm actually nervous, in a sense. Tonight, I'm going to have to come clean about everything that's happened over the past years. It wasn't the greatest moments of my life, and I'm unsure if I want to taint them with the knowledge of what I've done to myself; more than what I already have.

When we reach my building, I let us all in, and we make our way up to my flat in silence. Entering the apartment, I go straight to my room, change out of my clothes, and put on my pyjamas.

Coming out of my room, I find Sean and Mr Blackbourne sitting on the sofas in the family room. "Do you mind if I do my coursework first?" I ask. "I can cook us some food at the same time."

"We'll cook," Mr Blackbourne says, standing up. I realise then that he's wearing jeans again and a polo top. I like this look on him. "You do your coursework."

"Alright," I murmur. I collect my bag from where I dropped it by the door, and then set myself up in the living room. Sean and Mr Blackbourne retreat to the kitchen, leaving me to get lost in the assignment I have due next week.

I know that Sean is desperate to check me over, and that Mr Blackbourne wants to see what my mental state of mind is like, but I need time to get myself ready for it. I just hope that I don't see disappointment on their faces.

When I'm done with my coursework, I pack my laptop and textbooks away into my bag, and put my bag in my room before going into the kitchen. The smell of a curry sauce has been making its way around my small flat, but is much stronger in here. "Smells good," I say, announcing my arrival into the room.

Sean smiles at me over his shoulder, and my heart does flip at the sight. "Did you get all your work done?"

I nod my head and take a seat at the table. It's been set with knives and forks. Plates lay on the counter, ready for the food to be dished out. "Yeah, it wasn't too hard. I knew what I wanted to put in the assignment, so it came easy."
