British Bird
Chapter Forty One
Sang

I can't figure out what happened with Nathan because the screen changes again, and again, and again. A series of videos that look like they're in a school, flashing from one scene to the next. Before it changes entirely. Back to the hospital for more Cara. And then I see the church that's on Sunnyvale Court. Videos all merged together creating this little movie of their lives. I watch them train, I watch them transform the church into a diner. I watch as Kota trains his new dog Max, to be the most trained dog I've ever seen. North tinkering around with a jeep, Luke playing pranks, Sean at the hospital. Nathan doing martial arts, Victor at his computer, Gabriel shopping. Silas fixing a shower that I'm pretty sure is at Nathan's house, and then Owen planting roses.

Slowly, they start to become the young men they are today. Wiser, stronger, fitter. So handsome, I lose my breath every time I see their faces on the screen in front of me.

When the screen goes black, with no more videos, I press play and watch it all over again. I smile, I laugh, and I cry. And I repeat this for a good few hours before finally turning it off.

My eyes wander around the room and for the first time I realise how empty this place is. For the short time that the guys were here, they made it feel more than just a boring flat. They brought life into this place and now it feels cold and empty.

I sigh and pick up the letters that I got from Michelle, and the folder that they guys gave me. One by one, I comb through their letters, reading every single one before placing it neatly into the folder, where they belong. I hold on to the words on those papers and I hope that in the next few days I can get my plan moving. I realise, as I read the last letter, that I could have gone about this a whole different way, but I'm a stubborn girl now, and clearly very much an idiot that doesn't think things through thoroughly before making a final decision. But all I can do is hope that with time, I can get myself sorted and get home to Cara and Johnny, and to the boys. They're my home and I want to be with them.

Sooner, rather than later.

The next day I go to college and then to work after, doing a long shift at the hotel before collapsing into bed. The day after is much the same and before I realise it, the weekend has arrived.

I go into work Saturday morning, but not to work my shift. Adam waves when he spots me but I give him a tight lipped smile as I go out to the back, and straight to Quinn's office door. I knock and wait. The door opens. "Sang. Are you okay?"

My lips part, reading to tell her that I'm fine, but that would be a lie. It would also defeat the purpose as to why I'm here. "No. May I speak with you?"

"Of course, come in."

Quinn is a tall, slim woman with highlighted blonde hair and hazel eyes. She's in her late thirties with a husband, no children. She's been working here for several years, started at the bottom as a waitress and then slowly worked her way up the ladder until she became manager. The bar in the hotel is owned by the Hilton, but each section has their own manager. "What can I help you with?" Quinn asks as she takes her seat behind her desk, waving her hand towards the one in front of it, silently offering me a seat.

I sit down, dropping my bag to my feet. I pull the letter I wrote up last night out of the front pocket and hand it to her. "My resignation, in effect immediately."

Her eyes widen in surprise but she leans forward and takes the letter from me. "May I ask why?"

"Because I'm leaving. Not just this job," I whisper, playing with the toggles on my coat. "But the country. Once I have everything sorted, that is. I need to leave my job so I can work everything out, and quickly."
