Epilogue
SangJuly Fourth - 5 Years Later
I park my car in front of the large six door garage and pull up the hand brake, just taking a moment to feel the cool air coming from the air conditioning system before getting out and feeling the hot sweltering July heat. North finally convinced me last year to get my license. He had started teaching me, and he tried desperately to be patient but it just wasn't working. We had many arguments those first few weeks of getting me behind the wheel of a car and in the end I had to tell him that someone else had to do it because it was putting a strain on us. He agreed, apologised and showed me how sorry he was with his body.
Two months later, thanks to Brandon and Johnny, I had my license. Honestly, I wish I had done it sooner but I wasn't going to admit that to anyone. It does make things easier, especially because we all live such busy lives. I had relied heavily on the guys helping me get around, sometimes even Cara, Johnny, Evie and her guys had to drive me around. I've always had freedom to do what I want, but having the freedom with a drivers license. Well, it does change everything.
"Are we going to sit here all day?"
I laugh, looking over at my best friend. Evie sits in the passenger seat, dressed in a red, white and blue dress, which flares and hangs lovely on her body. It also hides the little baby bump that's growing. "Thank you for coming with me," I told her.
I had loads of decorations to drop off at Lighthouse Apartments. The staff there are doing a huge cookout, and the teens currently living there are excited to celebrate Independence Day. Some of the older ones that used to live in the Lighthouse but have not moved over to Flashlight Apartments are also going over to hang out with them for a few hours. Since the two buildings are so connected, the residents in both buildings are acquainted with each other, often cross paths and do tend to hangout a lot. I think the younger ones like knowing that one day, it could be them living independently in the Flashlight, with a job and attending the community college or university.
After leaving the Lighthouse, I found a chemist, parked outside and told Evie I was late for my period. A couple of months ago, the guys and I talked about children, and were all eager to start trying. I was very surprised that I, too, was eager to start the next step of our lives.
We have been fostering children for about two years now, which Luke absolutely loves. We all love it, but Luke especially. We've fostered twelve children in total now; all have their own unique story, but have all been able to be adopted or moved to live with family members that are willing to take them in. We felt that having our own baby was the next step for us, because at this point in time, marriage wasn't an option. Not because we don't want to, because we do want to get married. But because I don't know how to do it; we've found a few countries where it's legal to marry more than one person; Egypt, Algeria and the Central African Republic, just to name a few but a part of me wants individual ceremonies, whereas the other part of me wants a group ceremony. It's a hard decision, to me anyway, and I know I don't have to marry them legally, but again, some part of me wants to. I don't want to regret any part of my decision, when I finally decide what that is.
Why couldn't I have been simple like Evie; she 'married' her guys in her garden and then had a huge party afterwards.
Anyway, because of the whole marriage thing, we did feel a baby was the next step. It was then talked about how we would go about it. I asked Lily once how she and her guys figured it out, as they now have three children; two boys and a girl and she simply said, "Why choose? Let fate decide. You can get a DNA test once the baby is born."
