When the sun came into view they were tired, sore, and had awful headaches. Dr Collins, however, was the only one who realized the situation they were in.

"Maralyn," he began. She was sitting on the ground while Jack picked grass out of her hair. "Jacklin, can I speak with you?" He pulled Jack aside.

"What's up, Doc?" He said, too lightly.

"Jacklin, you know exactly what's up. That little girl-we can't bring her with us!"

"She has nowhere else ta go, Uncle. She said her parents left her because everyone else was too afraid to take her," he informed.

"Let's bring her to the police."

"WE ARE RUNNING AWAY FROM TE POLICE!" he shouted. They gave each other a hard stare. "Why do you tink nobody wanted her either?" He quietly challenged. "She told me she has a invisible friend. Not imaginary, invisible. Does that sound like anybody ta you?" Collins began to tremble with anger.
"Te police would kill her," he fought the tears. He wasn't quite sure why he was crying. "Ellie is going to die, isn't she?" He continued, his voice becoming shaky.

Collins stiffened at the question. "I-I mean that's quite-" he looked down. He wasn't sure if he wanted to admit the answer. "Quite probable, but if we get her to my brother-"

"Maralyn will die too, hmm?"

"If that's the case, yes."

"How could we leave her here? If anyone finds out that she's like Ellie, they'll take her away too," he complained. Collins thought this over and crossed his arms.

"She's only 6."

"Alright!" He threw his arms in the air. "Fine-Alright! Just-You have to take care of her. I'm not a babysitter." He walked away, mumbling to himself.

Ellie woke up and looked down into the river where the car was. Her head pounded. It was almost as loud as her heart was in the truck. While she sat up she noticed apart from the pounding, it was rather quiet inside of her head. Zero had gone completely silent. She could still feel his presence, but he was quiet.

"How does breakfast sound?" Jack asked. He looked like a mess.

"Sounds wonderful," Ellie answered quietly, picking at scabs from last night. She was hungry.

"It truly does." He smiled and walked away.

"How do you find it in you to make jokes at times like this!" She increasingly became louder as he he left. Jack shrugged without looking back at her.

"JACKLIN!"

Realizing she was still wearing a goofy elephant costume she slipped it off. Luckily she had worn clothes underneath it, Jack was not so lucky. She got up and went to figure out what the new plan was.

She climbed up the hill where everybody was, having a discussion without her.

"There's Ellie. C'mon everybody, let's go," Collins announced, leading the way across the road they had once driven on and through a field, far away.
