"Hey, guys!" A young boy called over to his friends. "Guys, Jack's here!"
The house had no less than 40 people in it, more than Ellie had ever been allowed to be in the same room with, ever. It was hot, crowded, and loud. In the back of the room a crowd of people stood around a table, playing a game of spades. The crowd was 50% female and 50% male, all about Jack's age or older. This looked to be a party of grown-ups in childish outfits.
"Ey! Jackaboy!" the young guy came up to Jack and did one of those handshakes that all men seem to know. "Oh," he quieted down. "You've got a lady friend," he wiggled his eyebrows, almost spilling whatever was inside his plastic cup.
Jack smiled. "Tis is Ellie. She's from work. Ellie, tis is Nathaniel." Ellie shook the man's hand and he soon left. She turned to Jack, nervous about what they knew of her.
"I know what yer tinking," he began. "Tees are all very nice people. Tey will not hurt you," he encouraged. Looking around, Ellie could not pick out one face that seemed unfriendly. She stayed close to him as they walked towards another small group of people dressed like ninja turtles.
"I would not bring you here if I knew you wouldn't enjoy it," he whispered. She nodded. Jack seemed to be sincere. "Trust me."
The next hour was full of excitement. Jack was impressed with how well she got along with everyone she met. He assumed it had to do with the fact she wasn't being interrupted by the little voice in her head. Never had Zero behaved so well in Ellie's life. Jack would lean against the wall and simply admire Ellie socializing freely.
It was around 1:30 when Ellie sat on the couch, head on Jack's lap, yawning. Most of the others were upstairs or gone.
"Do you want ta leave?" Jack asked, catching her contagious yawn. Ellie looked up at him and giggled. "What?" he asked, concerned.
"I can see up your nose from down here."
"You haven't had anyting ta drink," he smirked. "Why are ya bein' a silly?"
"I'm just..." Ellie stopped to think of a word that could describe her state of hysteria. "I'm just happy."
Jack looked down at her and nodded. He placed his warm hand under her jaw and brought his head closer to hers. She felt his breath stop short of her lips as his hands went around his throat as he begged for breath.
