Sleeping in a car was something Ellie never thought she would do, but here she was. They stopped on the side of the road and napped. It was dark and cold, where they had stopped. On the side of a hill that led to a small lake Maralyn, Dr. Collins, Jack, and Ellie hid from traffic. They had so far gotten a solid 2 hours of sleep.
They're sleep was cut short by Zero. He had become restless for reasons unknown. The car began to roll backwards. Branches from trees began to quietly scratch against the windows as they moved. It was slow at first, and unnoticeable, but was quickly caught by Ellie who was a very light sleeper.
"CHARLES!" she yelled as the car began to very quickly pick up speed.
Everyone jolted awake. It took them all a few moments to understand what had Ellie so shaken up. Dr. Collins pressed the brake.
"We're alright," he said, slamming his foot on the break. You could tell by the look of sheer terror on his face that his simple plan would not get them out. They were most certainly not alright.
"DO SOMETHING!" Jack yelled.
Ellie reached for the door. She tried to open it but it wouldn't unlock.
"We're trapped," she panicked."Aha!" Dr. Collins yelled. He pulled the headrest off of his seat and shoved it between the car window and door. He forcefully pushed and the window shattered. He passed the head rest to Ellie and climbed to the back.
"Go, Jacklin. Take the little one."
Maralyn, who was oddly calm crawled into Jacks lap in the front and they escaped.Charles repeated the same trick to smash the back window. Ellie slipped out and crashed into the rocky terrain, rolling down the hill beside the truck. Charles managed to wiggle himself through the window merely moments before the car was plunged into the water.
They all climbed to each other, meeting in the middle. Ellie scrambled to Jack and Maralyn. The thick air made it hard for her to breathe.
"Guys-" she managed to whimper. "Guys what happened?"
Charles shrugged. He knew exactly what happened, as did they all. The name "zero" creeped through each of their minds sending shivers down their spines."Oh," Ellie realized. She curled her knees to her chest and hugged them. Burying her head in her cold arms she quietly caught her breath. It wasn't her fault, but she couldn't help feeling guilty. She brought this on them.
And the worst was yet to come.
