Chapter Thirteen – Making it till the end.
It was almost the end of the period before break and I missed them so much. I then began solving the practice sheet in front of me. Just when I was going to attempt the last question, the bell rang, signaling lunch.
I headed towards the cafeteria. My phone’s battery was dead and I had no way of contacting Megan. We returned from grandpas late last night. My father arranged for everything in just two days, it wasn’t difficult being the man he is.
As I finished filling my tray, I scanned the room for a place to sit. My eyes fell on Chase. He was talking to a few guys, who I figured must be in the basketball team with him. He looked in my direction, astonished at first but then motioned me to sit at his table.
It was my first day and I was shy. He must have sensed it and ended his chat with them. As soon as they left, I joined him.
“I see that your shyness hasn’t gone.” He said smirking.
“I am not shy”
“Oh really? What about the night of the ball?”
“Okay, maybe I am.” I admitted.
“You should be confident; it will help you once you take over the business.”
I never thought about it until now. After my father, it was going to be me. We never talked about it before but I made a mental note.
I think he noticed my uneasiness and lightened the mood.
“I forgot to ask you but what on earth are you doing here? It’s almost the end of the semester” he asked with excitement in his eyes.
“I shifted schools” I narrated the entire story to him. He was someone who I could trust and he promised to keep it to himself. I didn’t want everyone to know the reason I got kicked out of the swimming team.
“I think I saw you in one of my classes but couldn’t recognize you in the uniform.”
We talked about our classes and both of us had almost the same schedule.
“Where are the others?” I asked.
“ The others have not opted for the same classes as we have and Paige has gone to Singapore with her family. Her aunt isn’t keeping well”
“Oh! Okay. Do you have any idea how your swimming team is?” I asked sheepishly.
“I haven’t seen them but I have heard that they are pretty good. You see Ivana over there? She is the captain.”
She looked like a true swimmer, her height gave her an advantage too.
“Don’t worry Gwen, I’m sure you will make the team.” He gave me an assuring smile.
Now I was really worried. What if I didn’t make it? I couldn’t shift back, could I? If I don’t make it then all this would be for nothing. I sighed.
“Let’s go, our history class starts in five.” He said getting up.
I knew that he wanted to provide me with a distraction so I forget about my audition.
We spoke during class without getting caught. Thank God for that! I was a good student at Hutcherson High and wanted to maintain that.
I dreaded the sound of the bell and at that exact moment it rang. I cursed Murphy’s Law.
