Chapter Fourteen – Not Just Yet.

I had to stay strong for dad. After the shocking news sunk in, I went to meet the doctor. He said that dad had a phase three tumor and it could be removed by surgery but there were chances of him not surviving. If he didn’t get the surgery done, the tumor would continue to grow and he would have to suffer and eventually die.

The thing with my father was that he would keep his problems to himself. He was strong for me when mum passed away and mourned secretly in his room. I wish I had given him more attention so that we could have caught the tumor earlier.

Tasha and Adrianna had both seen him have severe headaches and vomiting but they never took it seriously. Adrianna had also noticed him forgetting things and felt the need to repeat herself a few times till he got what she was saying. She had told him to visit the doctor but he waved it off by saying it was nothing. He never had any problem like that around me or maybe I never noticed it.

As I headed out of the doctor’s cabin, I saw Chase and Paige sitting outside on one of the benches outside my father’s room; I had completely forgotten they were there.

Just then a nurse came and told them that visiting hours were over. They nodded and came up to me.

“I’m sorry Gweneth but we have got to leave now, call if you need anything, at any time.” Said Chase hugging me.

“Be strong Gwen. We’re here for you.” Said Paige giving me another hug before they left.

I had told Tasha that I would stay and she agreed. After all, she wouldn’t be able to sleep on the couch.

As I motioned my hand towards the door knob, a tear escaped my eye. No! I said to myself, I can’t cry in front of him.

I braced myself and opened the door. His pulse rate echoed in the room, it was almost deafening.

He was asleep and I grabbed a chair and sat beside him. I put my hand in his and watched closely at his chest rising and falling each time he inhaled and exhaled air. He couldn’t ditch me, not just yet.

My head was rested on the hospital bed near dad’s stomach, when the opening of the door woke me up.

I sat up straight and saw that it was the nurse.

“It’s time for his injection” she whispered.

I simply nodded.

While the nurse readied the syringe, I went to the washroom.

I tied my hair in a bun and washed my face multiple times.

Suddenly, I heard the sound of a metal plate hitting the ground. I shut the tap and ran outside.

I exhaled in relief when I realized that the nurse had knocked it down.

At that, my dad sat up wearily, rubbing his temple.

“I am so sorry Mr Richards, I didn’t mean to-“ the nurse explained.

“It’s okay.” My father replied, his voice hoarse.

I admired him. He had a brain tumor and his head must have been pounding severely and yet, he forgives people so easily. His status never influenced his kind and forgiving nature. He was so down to Earth and always found reason. I was so proud to be his daughter.
