Niall immediately wrapped me in a bear hug. “You’re gonna kill it, Cam,” he whispered in my ear.
I nodded, feeling sick to my stomach. Stupid nerves. I wanted Louis here; he always made me feel calmer. Right now, I was torn between wanting Louis to know all about my theater life at all, and not wanting Louis to find out anything at all.
“Cam?” I blinked once and looked at Harry, who was offering me a small smile. “You’ve gotta go. We believe in you, love,” he assured, kissing my cheek.
Niall unwrapped me from the hug and gave me a gentle shove towards the door. I shot him a glare before slowly shuffling towards the bald man, clutching my script closely to my chest.
When I reached him, the man gave me a curt smile before stepping to the side, allowing me to fully walk through the doors. The man followed me, slamming the doors closed behind him, making me jump. I felt like I was in a haunted house, what with the man constantly barring his teeth and the sole light in the room being directed at the stage.
The theater was dark, but I was able to make out the two balconies and lower rows of empty seats. There were three sections on the ground floor; one in the middle and two off to the side. The middle looked like it could seat about two hundred people while each of the sides seemed to fit one hundred. The sections on the ground were separated by two aisles, one of which I walked down now with the man.
The two of us were headed towards a magnificent stage, the only thing in the room graced with a bright light. The stage was bare apart from the curtains in the rear and a large red “X” taped in the center to indicate where the actor should stand during auditions. Just looking at my old friends made my heart beat wildly and brought a wide smile to my face.
“Alright,” the man sniffed, breaking the beautiful silence. “Just a few questions. You’ll asked more during the audition, but I’ll get the basics now.”
I nodded, not completely trusting my voice just yet.
“Full name?”
“Cameron Rose Payne,” I said quietly. The man nodded, acknowledging he heard me.
“Age?”
“Seventeen.” Another nod.
“Gender?”
I wrinkled my eyebrows in confusion, glancing down awkwardly. “Female?” I answered, my response coming out in more of a question.
The man blinked adn then scribbled down my answer. “Right,” he mumbled, embarrassed. “Er, role you’re auditioning for?”
“Aurora.” I answered. The man nodded and stopped walking. I froze too, realizing we had made it to the side of the stage. There was a short stairwell leading up to the stage, up to my unlived dream.
“When you get on the stage, head to the red “X.” Stand there, and answer all of the questions the judges ask as honestly as you can. If, for some reason, you feel uncomfortable with a question, tell them. They will ask another. After the questions, you will read lines from the chosen scene with one of the judges. Try not to screw up. Then comes the song. You have a minute and a half, maximum. Got it? Good. Go,” the man spat out before turning me to face the stairs.
I gazed at the stairs, their short height suddenly expanding to the size of the Empire State Building before my eyes. Hesitantly, I climbed the first step, taking a deep breath.
I can do this. I’ve been rehearsing for weeks. I’ve studied the song, memorizing the lyrics and capturing the emotion. Harry and Niall have supported me the entire way. I got this. It was now or never.
