Chapter 21
Riker POV
Dad drove me over to Paige's, and I knocked on the door. Her sister answered it.
"Um... I'm Riker... Paige's friend?"
"Oh... Paige is... upset at the moment."
"I know. She told me. I wanted to try to make her feel better."
"Alright. She's downstairs."
"Thanks."
I went downstairs. Paige was in bed, crying harder than I'd ever seen her cry before.
"Paige?"
I sat down on the edge of her bed.
"Why are you here?"
"Because I was worried about you. I just wanted to make you feel better."
Paige sat up, hugged me, and cried into my shoulder. I rubbed her back slowly.
"Paige, your parents wouldn't want you to cry..."
"I can't help it... I miss them..."
"How many years ago was it?"
"2."
"Oh... That's not that long ago..."
"I know... I want to lay down."
She pulled out of my arms, and laid down in bed again. She took my hand, and gently pulled me down next to her. She moved so she was cuddled into my chest. She had her arms around me pretty tight. And I liked it. I mean... I'm still in love with her. Of course I'm going to like it.
"Riker..."
"What?"
"Why did you really come over here?"
"Because I wanted to make you feel better. I told you already."
"Not to try to get me to fall in love with you while I'm vulnerable?"
"No... I've already accepted your decision. I don't like it, but I've accepted it... I just hate seeing you upset, and knowing I can't really do anything about it. I really want to be friends, like how we used to be. I care about you."
"That's seriously the sweetest thing you've ever said."
I blushed, and held her tighter.
"Is there anything I can do to make you feel better?" I asked, quietly.
"I don't think so... But you're doing fine right now."
I smiled. It felt weird but kind of good to know that I was comforting her. I was making her feel better. Not Curt. Me.
I think I'm always going to have feelings for her. And there's nothing I can do about it.
Later...
Riker POV
Paige finally wanted to get up and do something to distract herself. She'd stopped crying for the moment. We were setting up a movie to watch on her laptop. I went upstairs and made popcorn. When I came back down, Paige was in bed with her laptop open on Netflix. She lifted the blankets up so I could slide back in next to her.
I put the popcorn on my lap, and Paige put the computer on hers. I put my arm around her, and she cuddled into my side.
Finally, this felt like how it was supposed to. I think we're past the horrible awkwardness. And we're friends again.
