My teacher told me
To fall in love with writers
'Cause they're the best lovers
That they will write about you
Not just about you
About how your eyes gleam
About how your hair shines
About how beautifully constructed
You are
My mother told me
That words are not just words
And they have life to creep
Inside the bright daylight
Or beneath the murky thoughts
That words give hope
That words give love
That words are beautiful
You are
My father told me
That words will cut through me
And when it does
I have nothing to wipe the blood with
And when it does
I'll have no one to help me with the bandages
And when it does
I'll be alone in the corner
With the dripping blood
And smudged mascara
But I have to be brave
You are
My first heartbreak told me
That I was the most beautiful
That I was not just striking
But the deepest haiku
That I was the most lovely sonnet
That I was the one you write an ode for
That a novel won't do
To describe how beautiful I am
It was too late to realize
That I didn't want to be beautiful
I wanted, I want to be loved
You are
I wanted to be
An Alys
Who creeped into his heart
I wanted to be
A Monique
Who made the badboy badder
I wanted to be
An Erika
Who chose to free herself
I wanted to be
A Dana
Who'd know that it's not just love
I wanted to be
A Kelly
Who knew her worth
I wanted to be
A Sandy
Who pursued what she wanted
But moreover
I wanted to be
An Ariesa Jane Domingo
Who created stories,
Characters, and life
Who built characters up
And gave a lot a life
This is the writer
My teacher was talking about
She's the one
You fall in love with.
