Chapter 12
Sophie
I waved to Adam as we went into our separate houses. I opened the door and stepped into the hall. Alice was sprawled out on the couch, her leg hanging over the armrest and her head resting on a pillow as she stretched and watched the TV. I walked into the living room and sunk into the armchair. I sighed and my bangs fluttered, then fell back into my eyes. I slumped in my seat, and grabbed my favorite blanket, my pink fuzzy and fluffy one, and wrapped it around my body, getting cozy. Alice looked over at me, and smiled, her face red, due to her being basically upside down, on the couch, her legs in the air.
"Hey, Soph. How'd the walk go with Adam?" She flipped off the couch and landed on the feet on the floor. She stood up and sat herself on the couch properly.
I rolled my eyes. "It was fine, I guess. Adam is okay, kinda annoying but maybe a friend." I pulled my slippers on that were beside the chair and wiggled my toes around. "I don't know. I can't freaking believe you made me go on that walk with him, you butt. I didn't want to, he makes me uncomfortable the way he looks at me."
Alice snorted and fell back onto the couch, her long blonde hair cascading off the couch, free from the ponytail it had been in earlier. "It wasn't that bad, Sophie. If I wasn't already with Mitch, I'd have snapped up Adam in a heartbeat. He's hot. And he likes you." She winked.
"Oh pa-lease, Ice." I stuck my tongue out at her and turned my eyes to the TV that was paused at a picture of Sue Sylvester from Glee shouting. "If he was going to like someone, he'd be all over Vanessa Mercury down the street. So forget about it, Alice. Just drop it." I shot her a stone cold look and the cheeky grin that was exploding across her face disappered.
"Fine," Alice sat up and crossed her arms. "I'm bored, Sophie. I wanna do something." I rolled my eyes again. I'd been doing that a lot lately.
"Well, I'm going to grab a sandwich, then go to bed because it's Monday tomorrow and we have school. So I don't know about you but I'm gonna do that." I gathered my blanket up into my arms, stood up from my chair, and shuffled towards the kitchen. I heard a groan escape from Alice and I snorted. She hated going to bed at 9:30 but we had school tomorrow and it was her choice if she wanted to be zombie-tired all day.
I quickly made a sandwich, ate it, and went towards my bedroom. "Night, Alice."
"Night, Sophie." Alice called.
I changed into my pajamas, turned off the lights and lay down in my bed. I stared up at the ceiling and sighed. The shine of the glow in the dark stars and moon on my ceiling soothed me and I looked out my window. The cherry blossom tree in our backyard moved in the wind gracefully. I sighed.
Maybe Adam wouldn't be so bad. Maybe we would become friends. Maybe I would finally, one day, be okay with Alice and Mitch dating. Maybe one day, it wouldn't matter. Maybe one day it wouldn't hurt as much. Maybe one day, I would finally find that special boyfriend, that imaginary, made up boyfriend, who was so perfect, and everything would be fabulous. Maybe, just maybe, one day, everything will be just right.
As I lay there, sighing and feeling very low, I murmured a single word, a simple prayer.
"Maybe."

The next morning, I woke up to, not birds chirping and sunlight streaming in my window, but to my annoying alarm clock and Alice singing off pitch along to Imagine Dragon's latest song Demons. I groaned and opened my eyes slowly. My sleep-filled eyes surveyed my room and I sat up reluctently. Getting out of bed, I didn't bother to find a pair of pants, instead I stumbled to the bathroom and hopped in the shower. After, I wrapped a towel around myself, ran back to my bedroom and chose a pair of skinny jeans, light brown Ugg boots, and a long sleeved sweater with a cat on the front. I skipped back to the bathroom and pulled my hair into a messy bun. I then added a quick layer of light blue eyeshadow and dark black mascara, that made my eyelashes look extra big and long. A touch of pink shimmer lip gloss, and I jumped down the stairs.
Alice was dancing around the kitchen, then she slid back to the stove and mixed something in a frying pan with a spatula. She was wearing a sparkly, turquoise tank top and skinny jeans. Her blonde hair was down her back, wavy and beautiful as usual. I sighed and sat down at the kitchen table. I looked at the stove clock as Alice set down two plates of scrambled eggs and toast. The clock read 7:30 am, and I hate to get up early. But it's for university so it's for a good cause, I guess.
We made the usual small talk, such as "good morning" and such, and when we were done, we stood up, grabbed our coats and Alice slipped on sneakers, and our purses. We walked out the door and I locked it behind us. We made our way down the driveway towards Alice's car, because it was her turn to drive. We alternate turns driving to school in our cars, taking the other as well to save gas.
Alice unlocked her car and she got in. I was opening my door when I heard someone call out.
"Hey, Sophie!"
I turned around slowly and cringed when I saw Adam. He waved cheerfully and smiled. I raised my hand and waved a bit.
"Hi, Adam." I choked out awkwardly. Like I said, I'm very shy and it takes a while to let someone become my friend.
"Have fun at school today. Maybe I'll see you there? You go to Oakland Univirsity, right?" I nodded slowly. "Cool, me too. Bye." He grinned and jogged off to a waiting car.
I got into Alice's car and sighed. She pulled out of the driveway and I looked out the window absentmindedly. This was going to be interesting.
