Korra's P.O.V.
"Where are you taking me?" I mumbled. I've been beaten up so many times but nothing could've compared to the pain caused by a taser. "I want to talk to whoever's in charge!" I shouted and tried to free myself from metallic handcuffs but there was no use. I was in a big van with darkened windows and couldn't see a thing. Didn't know where I was or where I was meant to go. I don't know many people who got accused for conspiracy and were set free. In fact, I know none.
"You're talking to her." I recognized the voice that made me shiver.
"Chief, is there something I did wrong?" I asked but didn't want to hear the answer cause I was already aware of it. I was not going to see sunlight till senior citizenship.
"You took part in illegal street fights, Korra. You've been warned to keep an eye on certain people but you disobeyed my commands, you ran away and avoided an encounter with the police and what's even worse, you've attracted attention. Every suspect will be careful from now on and I'll have to correct your mistakes and it will take years. You're a hooligan and pain in my ass. Want me to continue?"
"What is going to happen to me?" I shouldn't have asked that either.
"That's not up to me to decide. But conspiracy against federal government? I can assure you, nothing good, kid. Nothing good." Lin Beifong grinned.
"Why is it called conspiracy if I've never tried to cause damage to the government?" I turned around to face her. "This is some false accusation to cover the truth! You and your department blame me for your failures. You were the ones who had to catch those criminals in the first place, not some citizen who isn't good at anything else than getting in trouble. You and your government know about street fights but do nothing to stop it. Everybody in the city knows about that, is this the justice you want to be remembered for? You are disgrace to your family and don't deserve do be called Toph Beifong's daughter!" I couldn't stop yelling.
"Careful now, Korra." Lin whispered and her hands started to shake on the wheel.
"No, I'll say this even if it's the last thing I do!" I shouted. "I might be arrested for illegal fights but you and your department have no right to blame me for the conspiracy I took no part of. You come up with new political nonsense to distract people from real problems. Why not take down the arena once and for all? Because your so called government benefits from the fights, and your so called city stands on that money. You and people like you are the real criminals who should be arrested, not people like me who didn't have any other choice but to become tools in your game!"
"You think I'm not aware of what's happening to the city I swore to protect with my own life?" She interrupted her voice shaking. "You are right, government knows about the arena, government benefits from illegal street fights. How do you expect me to throw government in jail? I will get killed off in the blink of an eye. Why do you think Aang was murdered? He couldn't stand corruption, he couldn't take more of the politicians' arrogance, he couldn't watch innocent people tear each other apart for living. But he was unable to effect any kind of real progress. There are and will be politicians like them and ordinary citizens, people like you, who vote for trash like President Raiko and they will never allow justice to win. You didn't deserve this, but my hands are tied in this situation. I have Su, nephews and a niece, I can't risk their lives."
"What about my parents? Will they ever know the truth, or they will be fooled like all the remaining nation? Don't they deserve to know that their daughter wasn't a traitor but a victim?" Lin Beifong sighed but didn't answer. "So, this is it, huh?" I always imagined my death with more grey hair and loving family around me. Chief of police admitted the fact that she hated this city almost as much as I did, so that was only hinting at my inevitable execution. "I wish there were more chiefs like you in the future, Lin Beifong. I wish there were more people fighting for justice." I've always thought that my life was all about fighting and earning money but now when I'm saying my farewells to this world, I understand that none of these things truly mattered. I wish I could've spend more time with the people I loved. I wish I got to know Asami better. Even though I understand that we have almost nothing in common, I feel this weird attraction that I cannot quite explain.
"Kid..." Lin Beifong stopped the engine. "Get out of the car."
"W... What?" I couldn't believe my ears. Chief unlocked the handcuffs.
"Get out!" She yelled at me. I didn't have any other choice but to do as Lin Beifong ordered. Once in my life I should've obeyed her command. She shut the door behind me.
"What are you..." The chief turned on the vehicle and didn't stop until the car crashed into a tree. "Lin!!!" I shouted and tried to get closer.
