The final whistle blows. We won. We won the Women's World Cup 5-1. I can't believe it. Everyone is crying and hugging each other. I can't believe I helped my country win this. I'm honoured. I'm pulled away to do an interview.
"So June you and Hope had a great day here."
"We really did. It was an amazing day, but we can't take all the credit when Carli was incredible and got that hat trick. I was so happy that Lauren and Tobin also scored. It was really amazing," I say breathlessly.
"This was your first big tournament with the team, have you gotten along well with them?"
"Yeah for sure! Everyone has been so helpful and welcoming. Hope and I train together every day and work on our weaknesses together."
"So there isn't a rivalry between you and Hope?"
"Not at all. I really don't know why the rumour that we don't get along and are competing against each other started. She's been so lovely and really helped me settle into the team. She's a great mentor on the pitch."
"It must feel good to have your family here."
"Of course. My mum and step family are so proud of me. Chicha especially you know. He always told me that he knew I could do it."
"Neymar, Davi, and the rest of them are in Brazil?"
"They are. Ganso had a big party today, and Pai is getting ready for an operation on his leg. I wish him the best."
"How is it not having had Neymar by your side in the Cup when you were right there with him during his World Cup?"
"Uhm it's been difficult, but I know that he had a commitment as the Brazil captain at the Copa America. I know that he needed time away from the sport and media scrutiny after he was dismissed from the tournament. I do miss having him here," I say truthfully.
"Well we won't keep you any longer. Thanks so much for the interview!"
"Sure thing!" I smile and walk back to my team.
"June!" Alex yells coming over as I brush tears off my cheeks.
"Alex!" I give her a big hug.
"Don't cry!"
"Happy tears! Happy tears!" I laugh.
"Awwww!" Hope laughs as she comes over to hug me as well. "We did great!"
"You were awesome. We had a damn good run," I agree.
"Santos! Solo! Morgan! Get over here" Abby yells.
We all run over to her. I give Abby a big hug, having become close to the captain. I smile as I look up at the sky with the American flag draped around my shoulders from my mother. It's the same one my father wore when he won the World Cup. I wrap it tighter around myself feeling that my dad is close to me.
"Your father would be damn proud of you, June," Christie says from behind me.
"I know. I wish he was here to see this. Last time he saw me, I didn't even want to look at a soccer ball," I smile sadly.
Christie and Carli hug me tightly. I smile and hold them. I take a deep breath as it sinks in that we really are here and won the World Cup. The most serious tournament, and we won. I look up in the stands and see my mum waving me over. I excuse myself and run over.
"Congrats, baby!"
"Thanks, Ma! No word from Neymar?" I check.
"Sorry, no. But Mãe, Pai, Rafaella, and Carol all texted to say congrats."
