We sat in silence. Not the awkward kind the comfortable one. I brought my knees up to my chest and rested my head on them. I was exhausted and I think I was capable of sleeping on the ground. Everything I had heard this night was just too much for me; I mean I’m a teenager I should be worrying about the next test coming up or friend troubles not whether I’m taking my last breath. I lay my head back on the seat and sighed loudly; I guess that signalled to Lucas that something was wrong.
“Are you alright?” He said still keeping his eyes on the road.
“I’m fine,” I said.
“No you’re not,”
“Then why ask?” A small smile grew across my face.
He shrugged. I chuckled, closed my eyes and drifted off. Next thing I know Lucas is shaking me to wake up, I mumbled which made him laugh; I rubbed my eyes and looked outside.
“Here’s your house,”
“No shit, Sherlock,”
“Someone’s cranky,” He said in a sing-song tone.
“Shh, thanks for the ride…” I said, getting out of the car.
I walked up to the house; before I got up to it I saw my untied shoelace so I bent down and tied it. Suddenly, I heard gunshots from behind me. I panicked and lay on the floor. Then Lucas runs out from behind me, grabs my hand and rushes me to the back of my house. I feel tears running down my cheeks, I had no clue why I was crying but I just ran.
We both finally got to the back and sat against the wall. The gunshots repeated and I whimpered each time I heard one. This was my battle and now Lucas had gotten involved, he was innocently saving me but had no idea what he was getting involved in. I was breathing heavily, I looked around and everything looked blurry. I kept opening and closing my eyes but it was still the same. Lucas grabbed my waist and laid my head in the space between his head and neck. He was breathing really hard which was calming me in a weird way.
That minute I remembered my aunt. What happened if she was in the house? She must be as scared as I am, wondering where I am. I lifted my head and stood. A massive bang echoed through the dark sky and I fell to the floor, crying and shaking.
“Angel, why did you stand up? You want to get yourself killed!” He whispered angrily.
“Katie…” I gasped quietly, I burst into tears.
“Hey, hey, hey don’t cry,” He hushed, holding my hand.
“I need…” I was gasping for air.
“What? What do you need?” He voice was filled with concern.
I looked up into his eyes and tears made their way to our joined hands.
“I need to call Katie,” I said quickly.
“Your aunt right?”
I nodded and took out my phone when my hand was stopped by his. He mouthed NO, his eyes warning me. My head fell down, I heard another gunshot.
“I want to get out of here now!” I whispered angrily.
“Alright wait.”
He looked around cautiously, got out his phone; checking something, looked up again then finally stood up pulling me with him. He crashed his back against the wall and moved slowly still holding my hand he lead me to the massive oak next to my house. There I saw an alley that I had never realised was there before. I looked up at him grinning, I mouthed how? But his grin just got bigger.
