I left school that day feeling like I was about to puke. And since I didn't want to go home, I decided I'd go hang out at Missy's place. I followed the girl home, parking my car beside hers in the place that her mothers SUV usually took up.
"Parents out?" I asked.
"They're gone in Juneau for the week, off on holiday." She rolled her eyes as she unlocked the door. "It leaves me to myself in the house at least."
The inside of Missy's home was beautiful, with sprawling hallways and ginormous rooms. Her fridge was jam packed with good food and she had a nice car. Missy's parents were probably the wealthiest family out here, and she seemed to enjoy every single perk that came with it. We plopped down on her couch and curled up with blankets as we watched a movie, and the girl was shoving chips in her mouth like it was going out of style.
"So," She said between mouthfuls. "Who was that guy you were hanging out with today?"
"His name's Aidan, he just transferred to the school." I paused. "He's the Lumen boy."
"Nuh uh!" Her eyes widened. "That's the bastard everyone always tells stories about?!"
"I guess so, he's a nice kid." I stole a chip out of her bag. "Like, he's a bit stuck up, but he doesn't look down on you or treat you like a peasant unless you piss him off."
"And how do you know that?"
"Ronin pissed him off." I snorted.
"God your brother is a lunatic." Missy scowled. "Is he still harassing you?"
"It's only gotten worse Miss. He'll grab me out in front of people, I'm surprised he hasn't done it in front of Blake yet."
"You can file a report against him with the school you know."
"That'd only fix one half of the problem and create more at home." I shook my head. "I can't do anything right now. Once school is over at least I can hopefully move out and find somewhere away from him."
"I think you should go to New York," Missy laughed. "Become a model, and live it up the rest of your days with men begging for your hand in marriage."
"Oh god, if I could even get one to beg for a text message from me that'd be lovely."
"I'll beg you for a text message since you never seem to text me back." Missy elbowed me and I laughed, pushing the girl over. She just lay on the couch how she landed and continued eating her chips.
I leaned back and took a deep breath, feeling myself melt into the seat. I was sleep deprived, but for the life of me I couldn't actually just close my eyes and drift off. Instead I watched the movie playing, some cheesy horror disaster from the eighties. By the end of it I could see that Missy had fallen asleep herself, and I leaned down, curling up behind her and holding the girl like a teddy bear. She was warm, and it felt nice. I couldn't shake the cold and I was so desperate for warmth that I was debating breaking into her family's hot tub.
It was a while before I did anything. The position was cozy, and Missy snuggled up to me like the little bean she was. I watched movies over the top of her head as they played random assortments of fantasy, sci-fi, and romance. Just when I felt myself beginning to grow tired, I saw the light outside had changed drastically. The gray skies were now black, and the time read that it was already eleven. My relaxation faded away in moments and I scowled, realizing that I'd have to go home tonight. I needed a shower and a change of clothes.
"Goodnight Missy." I kissed the girls cheek, feeling her snuggle into her blankets more as I pulled away from her. I laid my blanket over her form as well before I grabbed my purse and my shoes, locking the door on my way out. I was able to fish my keys out of my bag without much hassle and I started my truck, only to my dismay, finding it unable to. I swore, hopping out and attempting to figure out the problem. The only thing I saw when I lifted the hood was everything frozen over. I slammed it shut and debating going back inside, only to remember that I'd locked the door, and the TV was on, so Missy wouldn't hear her phone ring. It was only a ten minute walk home though, so I bucked up and grabbed my things out of the back and began walking.
