[Avery in multimedia]
She made her way through the halls of the place she'd began to dread. Here for one reason and the faster she got to see her, the faster she could leave. Avery slowed down her pace. She stood leaning against the doorway of the exit that led towards the rehabilitation center's garden.
Avery stared at her mother who sat on one of the many benches, writing down something in what looked to be a brown journal. Nothing about her was.....beautiful. She'd completely let herself go. The beauty that was once there had gone away and was replaced with the ugly.
Each time she came to visit her, the realization that her mother is becoming unrecognizable sinks in and that kills Avery. That wasn't the same woman that gave birth to her. She wasn't that woman who once upon a time cared and loved her. She was someone else and she dearly wanted that person to leave and give her mother back but knew that wasn't possible, she was too far gone.
"I didn't expect you to be visiting today, Avery." Mrs. Hall, one of the nurses said smiling at her. "How have you been, sweetheart?"
"I've been living and things could be worse so I won't complain. There's something that I wanted to ask you." Avery replied.
Averting her attention from her mother to Mrs. Hall. She didn't show it but she cared about her mother's wellbeing. Although, she hasn't been here in about three weeks after what happened the last times. Avery and her mother had a little incident where it ended in Avery flipping the table over and storming out.
"Has she been making any progress, anything at all?" Avery stared into her ocean blue eyes.
"Nivea hasn't been making progress sweetheart. She's actually getting worse. We caught her with drugs in her room the other day." Mrs. Hall answered with a sympathetic look on her face.
Avery wasn't shocked to be honest. Her mother has been in and out of this rehab for the past few years with no improvement. It wasn't worth her visiting anymore but she still did. That was still her mother in some way.
Shaking her head, she ran her fingers through her hair. She's been hearing the same thing and it's disappointing each and every time. Avery understands that she lost the love of her life and son and that had to be hard, but she shouldn't have let it get to the point where she just threw everything away. It just didn't make sense.
It hurts her because it's almost as if she just gave up on Avery. It's like she wasn't a good enough reason for her to stay strong get through the loss. She too lost her father and older brother, yet somehow she's to pull through without turning to drugs. It's not fair but that's life and she'll just have to deal with it.
"Thanks for taking the time out of your day to speak with me. I can't thank you enough for keeping an eye on her." Avery sighed. "Remember, I was never here."
Placing a hundred dollar bill in her hand, she walked away before she could try to hand it back over to her. She's tried to do so many times before but Avery refused to take it, Mrs. Hall deserve it. She's made sure to look out for Avery's mother and she went above and beyond trying to help her. Not only that but she has six mouths to feed.
Avery heard her yell a 'thank you' in her direction, but she didn't bother looking back. She took the exit out the building and immediately felt the effect of the hot Texas weather. The heat from the sun baked her smooth caramel skin. Sweat beads formed on her forehead making her groan in annoyance.
Using the sleeves of the hoodie she wore, Avery wiped them away and pulled her car keys out from the pocket. The sound of her phone ringing caused for her to halt in opening the door and look down to see who was calling. When seeing who it was she laughed. Answering the phone, she brought it up to her ear.
