Chapter 7

The next day...

Riker POV

My back hurt even more today. I could barely move.

I'd woken up before Dakota even came in to wake me up. I was just laying in my bed in so much pain, not knowing what to do.

The door slid open, and I saw Dakota.

"Why are you already up?"

"My back hurts! Really bad!" I whimpered.

The tears started, but I just couldn't help it. I feel so sore.

"Ok... Um... I'll go get mom."

Dakota left, and a few minutes later, her mom climbed up my ladder.

"Dakota said your back hurts."

I nodded, and tried to calm down, but it just hurt so bad!

"Ok. Well, you can't just stay here all day. I expect you to help out on the farm. But I'm going to let you do some of the easier chores so it won't strain your back so much. I know your body isn't used to all this work. But I still expect you to help. If you come to the kitchen, I'll give you some medicine."

She left, and I sighed. Tough love... I'm not a fan of it.

I changed out of my pajamas, brushed my teeth, and used the bathroom. I went to the kitchen. Mrs.S gave me a pill, and I took it. I sat down at the kitchen table, watching Dakota and Cody eat breakfast.

"You want anything for breakfast?" Dakota asked.

"Um... N-no... I'm n-not hungry."

Dakota finished her breakfast, and then I followed her outside.

"So... Mom said to go easy on you today since you're... yeah... So let's go pick vegetables."

I sighed, and followed her. This was probably the farthest we'd had to walk. They have so much land...

Dakota gave me a bucket. We were picking tomatoes again.

"Can I sit?" I asked.

"On the dirt?"

"Yeah... My back hurts..."

"Um... Yeah, I guess so..."

I sat down, and set the bucket on the ground.

"Does your back really hurt that bad?"

"Yes..."

My cheeks flushed a little. I honestly just wanted to go curl up in my bed and rest. Even though I took the medicine, my back still really hurt.

Later...

Dakota POV

We'd collected eggs. Riker honestly looked miserable. I can tell he's in a lot of pain. He keeps looking like he's going to cry, but he doesn't. He just bites his lip, and gets this bad look on his face.

It was almost time for dinner, so we decided to head back to the house. Riker went straight to his bedroom. I went to the kitchen.

"Mom, I think something's wrong with Riker."

"What do you mean?"

"He just seems like he's in a lot of pain."

"Did he do his chores today?"

"Yes... But he just looks miserable. His back is really hurting him."

Mom sighed.

"Well let's see how he's doing after dinner," mom said.

"Ok..."

I went down the hall to my room. I climbed up to my loft, and slid open the door separating me and Riker. He was curled up in bed, and he was crying.

"Are you ok?" I asked, crawling over to him.

He shook his head no.

"What's wrong? Your back?"

He nodded. I sighed.

"I know it's hard being on a farm, Riker... I've been here my whole life. But sometimes you just have to fight through the pain.

"It just hurts so bad!" He cried, turning his face into his pillow.

I sighed, and moved closer to him.

"Riker... It's going to be ok. You'll feel better."

He started screaming into his pillow. His whole body was tense, and it was scaring me a little.

"Riker, come on. Calm down. It's almost time for dinner."

I pulled the covers down about to his waist. I put my hand on his back, and he flinched. I started rubbing his back gently, and I could see him relax a bit. He quieted down a little, and I was glad.

"Dakota! Riker! Dinner!" I heard mom yell.

"Come on. Let's go eat."

"I'm not hungry..."

"Well come sit out there with us."

He sighed and sat up.

"Can I have more medicine?"

"Yeah."

We climbed down, and walked into the kitchen. I gave him some medicine, and then we went outside for dinner. Riker sat next to me.

Later...

Dakota POV

Riker didn't eat anything for dinner. And now we had more chores to do. He was walking behind me, and he looked stiff and uncomfortable.

"Riker, does your back still hurt?"

"Yeah... A lot..."

"Come here."

He walked up beside me. And he looked kind of nervous.

"Bend over and touch your toes."

"I can't touch my toes. I'm not flexible."

"Bend over as far as you can."

He bent over. I put my hands on his back, and pushed him down a little bit farther.

"Ugh, this hurts!"

"I know, but it'll help stretch out your back."

"It hurts."

"Hold on. Take a deep breath, and I'm going to push you a little farther, ok?"

He nodded.

"Ok. On 3. 1. 2. 3."

I pushed him down a little more, and then he stood up straight again.

"Feel any better?"

"I'm not sure..."

"Well come on. The faster we finish, the faster you can go rest."

We got all the animals back in their barns. And then we went back to the house.

I honestly felt bad for Riker. He's in pain, and he looks miserable.

I don't know what I should do...
