Chapter 3
Riker POV
I followed Dakota into the house, and into a bedroom down the hall. It was kind of strange how the room was. There was no bed, and almost no furniture. But halfway up one of the walls was like... a floor or something. And there was a ladder going up there.
"W-where do I sleep?"
"Up there. It's called a loft."
She said it like I was stupid.
I put my bags down, and climbed up the ladder. There was a mattress with a comforter on it that was dark purple. At the other end of the loft, there was a square.
"What's that?"
Dakota climbed halfway up the ladder.
"What?"
"That," I said, pointing.
"That's a door."
"Where does it go?"
"My bedroom. It's the same as yours. I have a loft."
"Oh..."
Dakota climbed up, opened the little door by sliding it to the side, and crawled through. She shut the door, and I was all alone.
I climbed down the ladder. My legs shook a little. I feel like I'm going to fall.
I grabbed my backpack and suitcase, and climbed back up into my loft thingy.
"Dakota, go get him, and teach him how to do chores!" I heard somebody yell.
I felt really nervous all of a sudden. I hate yelling. Yelling leads to me getting in trouble and slapped.
The loft door slid open, and I saw Dakota.
"Come here. I have to teach you stuff," she said, sounding annoyed.
I followed her into her loft, and then we climbed down the ladder. She had a big window, and she opened it. There was no screen.
"Let's go."
She stepped out the window. The ground was only about 2 or 3 feet down. I stepped out too, and she started leading me somewhere.
"D-Dakota?"
"What?"
"Um... B-before we go um... w-wherever we're g-going... I h-have to use t-the r-restroom."
"No. You can do initiation."
"W-what's that?"
"Anyone who comes and sleeps over for the first time... Me and Cody make them do something."
"What?"
"You can go to the bathroom in the outhouse."
"W-what? I t-thought that was j-just something they had in o-old times."
"It is. We don't use it anymore. Just for initiation. It's in the woods. And the rule is that you can't tell our parents about it. Because then Cody and I would get in trouble because they don't want us messing with the outhouse. Got it?"
"Ok..."
Dakota led me down this long path. I didn't know if it was a path or a road. We came to these woods, and the path got smaller.
After a few minutes of walking, we came to a wooden structure.
"Go ahead. I'll wait for you," Dakota said, pushing me towards it.
I reached for the door, and slowly opened it.
"B-but t-there's spiders," I whimpered.
"Riker, get over it. Spiders are the least of your problems. You're going to have to deal with much worse things. Like horse poop."
