Chapter 16
Middle of the night...
Riker POV
I sat bolt upright, breathing hard.
Freaking nightmares...
I heard something in the distance. And then I heard thunder. It shook the house.
The loft door slammed open, and Dakota was shining a flashlight on me.
"Get up. We have to go. Now!"
"Why? What's going on?"
"Tornado sirens."
I grabbed my backpack since it was still packed from when I flew home. I was surprised, but Dakota was waiting for me in my doorway.
She walked quickly towards the front door. I followed. When we got outside, it was pouring out. The rain was coming down hard in giant drops. Dakota grabbed my hand tight, and started running.
Thunder cracked above us, and it literally took everything in me not to scream. I could hear the tornado sirens very clearly now.
We got to the storm cellar, and Dakota ripped the doors open. We both went down, and Dakota latched the doors shut again with a metal bar.
I sat down on the floor in the corner of the small room. I brought my knees to my chest. This is the most scared I've ever been in my entire life. Dakota hates me, her parents aren't here, and there's a freaking tornado!
Dakota shined her flashlight on the ground. There were a few boxes with extra food and water for emergencies, I guess.
She pulled out a small lantern, and turned it on. She shut off her phone light. She turned on the radio, and then brought it and the latern over to me. She sat down beside me.
I was barely listening to the guy on the radio.
"Riker."
"Huh!?"
"Did you hear what he just said?"
"No!"
"He said the tornado is heading like... Right for us. And it's big. They classify tornados by how big and fast they are so they have a guess of the damage. The scale goes from F1 to F5. This is an F4."
"We're going to die!"
"No, we're not... Hopefully..."
"W-what's g-going to h-happen!?"
"We just have to hope the doors stay shut, and we stay safe."
"This is awful!"
I covered my face, and started crying into my hands. Dakota wrapped her arms around me really tight.
"Why are you being nice to me?" I asked through my tears.
"We could die, Riker. And you have to know that I still love you."
"Then why were you pushing me away!?"
"Because it's getting close to fall. I can't do a long distance relationship, Riker. I wanted to end it before fall so it wouldn't hurt so bad."
"You could've told me!"
"I'm sorry!"
"I love you, Dakota."
"I love you too."
"And now we're going to die."
"Stop saying that, Riker."
