Chapter 9

Middle of the night...

Riker POV

I woke up, hearing some weird siren in the distance. The loft door slid open quickly, and I almost screamed.

"Riker, get up. We have to go," Dakota said, shining a flashlight on me.

"What's going on?" I asked, sitting up.

"There's a tornado warning for our area. The tornado sirens are going off. We have to go to the storm shelter."

"Where's that?"

"It's in our yard. Now, come on!"

I followed Dakota into the kitchen. Her whole family was there. So... this is serious...

We had umbrellas, and we had to walk through the rain to get to the storm shelter. It was about a 10 or 15 minute walk. There was this door on the ground. Mr.S opened it, and we all climbed inside. There was food and some water down there. Dakota grabbed my wrist, and pulled me over to the wall. She sat down, and pulled me down next to her.

"A-are we g-going to d-die?" I whispered, starting to get all worked up.

"Probably not. There was a tornado spotted not that far from here, and it was heading away from us. But sometimes they're unpredictable, and turn around. So we're here just in case," Dakota said, putting her hand on my leg.

I was freaking out inside. I've seen those movies where there are tornadoes, and even though everyone hides underground, they all end up dead somehow. I just want to go back to Colorado! The mountains would keep me safe!

"Riker, are you ok? You're shaking," Dakota whispered.

"I-I'm j-just scared."

"We'll be fine, Riker. Tornadoes don't usually last that long. And this was a small tornado. Don't worry."

I could hear the thunder outside. There's a storm, it's dark, and there's a tornado. Could this be any worse?

Dakota's hand slipped behind me, and she started rubbing my back. I thought it was sort of strange, but it made me feel not so alone.

Cody was playing the radio on his phone. They were talking about the tornado and the storm. I just tried to tune it all out. I'm scared enough already.

I scooched closer to Dakota. She put her arm around me tight. And somehow, I ended up laying in her lap, scared to death. I was imagining the worst. How could I not!?

"Guys, we can go back to the house now," Mr.S said, after a little while.

We all got up, and climbed out. I stayed glued next to Dakota. She was my only source of comfort right now, and I still feel all shaky.

We walked back to the house in the rain. Dakota and I didn't have an umbrella, so we were kind of wet. Dakota walked with me to my bedroom. I curled up in bed, hiding under the covers.

"Riker?"

It was Dakota.

"What?"

"Are you ok? You seem kind of shaken up."

"Um..."

She pulled the covers down, so she could see my face.

"You look scared."
