Chapter 26

A few days later...

Riker POV

Dakota made me practice walking every day. I could finally go to the bathroom by myself now, and I was pretty happy about that.

My legs seemed stronger, and they didn't shake so much. I had feeling in my legs and feet now. I was pretty much all better except my legs just weren't very strong yet. And my back would still hurt if I didn't take medicine. But I wasn't on strong medicine that made me tired. I didn't have to have an IV. I could just take pills.

"Riker, guess what!?" Dakota said, walking through the door.

"What?"

"You get to come home today!"

"Oh... Really?"

"Yeah. You'll just have to be a little careful until you get stronger. Your nurse is getting you a wheelchair so you don't have to walk all the way out to the car."

My nurse came in with a wheelchair, and I sat down in it. I was only in a T-shirt and my underwear, but I didn't really care. These are the clothes I've been wearing for the past couple weeks. And it didn't feel awkward anymore.

I was taken to the car where Dakota's dad was. Dakota helped me into the back of the car, and then she got in beside me.

We were taken to her aunt's house, and Dakota helped me down the stairs to the basement. There wasn't much down here. Just sleeping bags, since her siblings were staying down here too.

Dakota laid out my sleeping bag next to hers, and I sat down. If I stand for too long, I get really tired because my legs aren't strong yet.

"So... What exactly do we do now?" I asked.

"Well... If you want, you can go take a shower since... you haven't really taken a real shower in a few weeks. Or maybe a bath would be a safer option for you. I don't want you to fall."

"Oh... Yeah... But do I have clothes?"

"Your mom sent a bunch of your stuff... This is how it's going to work... Your mom still has rights to you, but now we do too. So... It's kind of like we share you now. So you can still see her whenever you want. But you'll live with us."

"Ok..."

"I'll go get you some clothes. I think they're upstairs somewhere."

Dakota brought down a suitcase of my clothes. I picked out some pajamas, but I stayed on the floor.

"Dakota?"

"What?"

"How are these next few days going to work?"

"I don't know... Mom and dad are busy trying to get our house and barns built again, so we don't have to do chores... And usually I'd just hang out with you at the hospital, so... I don't know. We'll go to sleep, wake up, eat breakfast, and... I don't know. Just do whatever we want. Why?"

"I don't know... I just didn't know if we were like... going to do something or whatever."

"We're not... But when the farm and the house gets rebuilt, we'll have to do chores again. So... It's sort of like we're on a mini vacation or something."

"Ok... Well I'm going to go take a shower."

"Wait. You mean bath, right? I don't want you to fall."

"Fine. I'll take a bath. Can you show me where the bathroom is?"

"Yeah."

Dakota helped me up, and then showed me to the bathroom.
