"Phewww okay Lazarus Jones... You can do this" I told myself in the mirror.
I grabbed my chain putting it on.
I checked over my outfit. White tee, light blue jeans, Red bomber jacket and my red and white Jays to match.
"Ya look nice L" I smirked but my nerves wouldn't settle down no matter how many times I tried giving myself a pep talk.
I checked myself out in the mirror one more time, I was really feelin myself tonight.
I took my phone out taking a picture.
Since I haven't posted in two months, I went to Instagram uploading the picture.
Even though I had social media I rarely even posted, I didn't really feel comfortable. I felt as if all my pictures were ugly and weird looking.
Daryl always pointed out all my flaws in family photos.
"Look at ya eyes boy.. And that smile is so ugly lookin like a damn squirrel" He'd laugh.
My mother would slap him across the chest. "Leave him alone, Daryl" She'd scowl.
"What its the damn truth, he's the weirdest lookin person I've ever seen in my life" He'd say rubbing his chest to soothe the pain. He said it so many times till I started to believe him.
I put my phone in my pocket and left out of the bathroom.
"Mom, I'm leaving now" I said coming down the stairs.
She flicked ash from the cigarette as she looked at me. "You look nice sweety" She spoke, her voice weary and raspy.
"Thank you, Mariah and I are going to the movies"
"You better hurry and leave before Daryl get back"
"Yes Ma'am" I walked over and leaned down kissing the top of her head inhaling the smell of the cigarette.
I coughed. I walked over to the door and grabbed onto the handle but stopped and looked back at my mom and for a hot second, my mind had flashed and I seen the old her before she met Daryl, my stomach filled with butterflies but quickly vanished when I realized it was only my imagination and wishful thinking.
"I love you Mom"
"I love you too son"
I left out of the door and headed to the bus stop. I wasn't comfortable with her coming to my house seeing my parents and stuff. They weren't people she should meet.
It was a bit chilly tonight good thing I wore this jacket.
I texted Mimi letting her know I was on my way.
-----
I walked up to the movie theater and looked around for Mariah.
