The spirit child knew they didn't have much time. Already they could feel their slight grasp on reality slipping through their un-holdable fingertips.  Every bright spot of color was becoming dimmer, like it was just a memory. Or a dream. A dream where they could be alive again. Where they could hug their mom and dad again,  where they could lie in a field of golden flowers and mourn their brother in peace. A dream where they could properly thank their savior.

After Frisk 'awoke' surrounded by their friends, they felt disoriented. Had everything with Asriel really happened? Or had it just been a lucid dream while they were knocked out cold? Then they were told about how the barrier was miraculously broken, how no one knew how it was possible, how they couldn't remember anything past the flower's attack. Realizing what had happened, they avoided everyone's questions in favor of some privacy. Toriel, with her motherly instincts, knew what Frisk needed and told everyone to let them be. Frisk thanked her gratefully. They escaped into the throne room and Toriel kept anyone from following them. There they asked inside their mind,

    Chara?

    The response was immediate.

    I'm here.

Frisk took a deep breath, feeling great relief.

After what happened with Asriel, I wasn't sure if you'd still be here.

    Me either.

Frisk sighed, picking one of the beautiful flowers.

Chara, you know how grateful I am for you, right? Back there, if it wasn't for your memories with Asriel before, we wouldn't have made it. The barrier would have never been opened. Don't you see Chara? You finally did it. You freed all monsters.

It was a little while before Frisk heard an answer.

Frisk...I....Thank you, for everything. If you'd hadn't have fallen I wouldn't have been anything. Just a failure who got their death wish later than the asked for. I would have just been my brother's murderer. But ever since you fell, it feels like I've...healed. I just wish I could thank you in person, and to tell Asriel I'm sorry.

Frisk couldn't hold back their smile.

Chara, I have an idea. Would you be willing to go back to the ruins again? To the place we fell.

They felt Chara's confusion, but their answer was sure.

    Of course.

The trip back to the ruins felt like no time at all, since all the puzzles were now completed. Everywhere they past monsters came up, telling them about the barrier and how excited they were for the surface. In Snowdin they even meet some of the Amalgamates from the True Lab, hanging out and talking with their monster families. It seemed everyone had their, if not perfect, then happy ending.

    Except for two.

When they reached the Ruins door, they found it open, as if someone had left in quite a hurry. Frisk entered and closed the door behind them. They continued to walk down the long, purple halls, wishing they had a hand to hold. Secretly, Chara was wishing the same. Unlike regular ghosts, who were simply another kind of monster, a spirit like Chara couldn't be seen or touched. The only time Frisk ever saw Chara was in their dreams, when their soul was at rest. These times were rare, however, as the two of them had been completely focused on reaching Asgore and hardly had time for sleep.

There was one time in the Snowden Inn, however, that is forever burned into their memories. Before, when Frisk went to sleep at Toriel's home, Chara had been to shy and scared to show themselves to Frisk, but by then they finally felt comfortable enough with them to see Frisk, and let Frisk see them.

Once they were sure Frisk was asleep, they closed their eyes and imagined them both standing in a field of golden flowers on the surface. It was sunset, and the fall breeze was a crispy sort of cool.

They opened their eyes to see a familiar shade of green. Their favorite sweater, the one their mom knitted for them to match Asriel's when they first fell, the one they were buried in. They looked up and felt strands of auburn hair brush their face gently in the wind.  When their eyes adjusted to the light, they saw beauty standing in front of them.

Frisk had a short stature; their sweater almost swallowed them. Their cheeks were round in a cute way, and their almond eyes squinted as they grinned.  Their hair was messed by the wind, dark curls wavy wildly, but they didn't seem to care. Chara felt speechless for a good while, and neither one moved. Both felt cautiously giddy and they didn't want to ruin it. Finally, Chara spoke in a whisper, not used to the feeling yet.

    "Greetings, Frisk. I am Chara."

Frisk's huge grin impossibly grew even bigger.

"Hello, Chara. It's great to finally meet you, you're really cute!"

Chara's pink cheeks filled with color and Frisk giggled.

For the rest of that night they talked, admiring each other as they did. When morning came and Frisk woke unwillingly, they kept up their conversation within Frisk's mind. They were saddened to not be able to see each other, but for now this was enough.

Now as they got closer to the beginning Chara's feelings of confusion were met with excitement, but for what they weren't exactly sure. Frisk, however, felt completely giddy. And when they reached that little patch of golden flowers and saw who stood there, they were both filled with determination.

AN: Yay! First Chapter! Please let me know what y'all think!

Also, the Charisk dream idea was originally by Hawker-Rawr but I really wanted to expand on that idea so it's cannon for this story.

Hopefully I'll be able to update maybe once a week or so, we'll see what happens.

Anyways, hope y'all are having a great day! And again, thanks for reading!
