Katelyn's POV:

I chose to sleep on the couch, but even away from him I couldn't sleep. So I stared at the ceiling, trying not to think about everything that had happened. The knife was on the table besides the couch, still wrapped up in the cloth, which was now stained in dried blood.

A little bit of the blade peeked through the worn, ripped cloth, reflecting the silver moonlight. I closed my eyes, hoping to fall asleep, but sleep wouldn't come. My body and mind refused to relax, warrior instincts immediately returning. A sense of dread filled me, but I was ready for the fate I had brought upon myself.

I knew I would be caught sooner or later, but I had refused to believe it. I had gotten comfortable. I let myself get distracted and settle in one place. I foolishly thought I had outrun them and that they couldn't find me. But now that they were so close, I finally realized how wrong I was.

I had let myself become weak, and now they were circling around me like vultures circling around a dead or weak animal. They were circling me, taunting me, getting ready to strike.

((Lion King/Animal metaphor because my school drama club is doing the Lion King. XD))

I knew I shouldn't have let myself become weak. I should never have let myself be cornered like I was now, unable to run away.

But there was nothing I could do about it. It was because of my own impulsiveness that got me here. The same impulsiveness that got my mother killed.

<14 years ago>

The O'khasian guards were right outside the door, banging and kicking the wooden door that was about to break any second.

"Katelyn!" Her father shouted, full of panic and fear. "Get your mother and your brothers and hide! Go! Now!"

Katelyn, who was three, had no idea what was happening, but she too could sense the panic and fear.

Her mother grabbed the youngest of the three boys, who was only 3 months old, and motioned for Katelyn to get the other two 1-year old twins. They found a place to hide and watch, their faces a mix of confusion and fear as her mother held the baby in her arms to keep him from crying, and Katelyn held each of her brothers on her laps.

The banging on the door was getting louder and louder. It didn't seem like it would hold for much longer. But there was nothing anyone could do. Katelyn's father was frozen in fear, and everyone else was watching, helpless.

The door couldn't hold any longer. With a final thud, the door broke into two. Guards poured in, weapons raised, and surrounded Katelyn's dad. Being only 3 years old, Katelyn didn't know what was going on at the time, but she could sense the worry as her mother watched.

"We have been told that you have three young sons. They, and you as well are needed by High Priest Zane of O'khasis," one of the head guards said. Katelyn's dad stood there, completely shocked.

"B-but, they're too young! The eldest is only a year old!" Katelyn's dad protested.

A confused Katelyn watched from her hiding place. She glanced over at her mother for assurance, but instead of comfort, the first emotion she felt was intimidation. Her mother's expression was fierce, and there was a fire in her eyes. She was determined to protect the family, and even Katelyn felt a little scared.

Her mother glanced in her direction, and for just a split second, if you looked hard enough as Katelyn had, you might've been able to see the fearful tears the mother's eyes held. Quickly, her mother blinked away those tears and handed the young, confused child over to Katelyn.

She gently kissed her four children lovingly and then, with a sudden change of expression, took out her weapons, a set of pugilistic gloves, which she called her "fire fists".

She waited a moment before charging, as if weighing her options, or maybe waiting for the right time as the guards continued, the conversation now growing louder and more out of control.

"They will be taken into a military boarding school," the guard said, "Now move aside."

Katelyn's father did not move. Instead, he yelled.

"I WON'T LET YOU TAKE THEM!!"

At that moment, the weapons were brought out. They began advancing into the house. It was then Katelyn's mother decided to charge, tears of anger and sadness in her eyes.

With her weapons in hand, she charged, killing the head guard of the group, and badly injuring the guards around him. She managed to keep Katelyn's father safe, but she had to pay a price.

She had saved her family, at least for a few years, but it was at the cost of her freedom, and later on, her life.
