Travis' POV:

I arrived to the house and found Katelyn asleep on the couch. I held it close to my chest, my heart pounding in anticipation. I couldn't wait to show it to her.
Upon walking closer, I noticed that she was barely breathing. Her heartbeat was very faint and almost nonexistent. Her face was pale and there was sweat all over her face. She sputtered for a bit, struggling to gain breath, but stopped after a short while. It must've have been one of her flashbacks again, although I didn't expect her to pass out from one.
Luckily, my father had some simple spells for things like this. He used them often to take care of my mother and I when I was younger. I cast some simple incantations and set her down on the bed, and I prayed for Enki's blessing to be on her.

About an hour later (Midnight)

Katelyn's POV:

I woke up to see Travis next to me. Did he know? I took a deep breath and tried to open my mouth, but no sound came out.
Seeing that I was coughing and sputtering, he walked to the kitchen and got me a glass of water.

"H-how long was I out?" I managed to say after gulping down a mouthful of water.

"I don't know," he replied. "You were on the floor when I got back, so I'd say at least three hours?"

I took a shaky breath. I didn't want to ruin whatever he had planned, so I stood up. Feeling a tug on my hand, I saw Travis looking at me and shaking his head no. I opened my mouth to object, but he wouldn't let me do anything after seeing me like that. He placed the small box he was carrying before on a shelf.

I wondered what was in there. My eyes drifted to it, and immediately Travis said, "It's a surprise. I'll give it to you tomorrow after you get some rest."

He got some food and we sat across from each other on the bed, eating it as a midnight snack.

"You know," I said, "You didn't have to look after me like that. I'm fine."

"No you're not. I've been worried," he said, his face suddenly serious. "If I didn't come home when I did, I'd hate to think of what could've happened."

I sighed. Maybe he was right.

"Thanks anyway," I said with a sigh.

The night was cold and windy, which was different from the Ru'an region. After all this time, I still wasn't used to it. I definitely didn't dress for this kind of weather. But even though this region was way different from home, I could still make out the unmistakable sound of guards outside. I wondered if Travis could hear them too.
Without meaning too, my shoulders stiffened and I reached for my weapons. He put a reassuring hand on my shoulder, and I relaxed a little. It seemed like he had no idea they were outside, which was good. They were plotting something outside. Was this the day?

A voice brought me back to reality. Travis.
"Katelyn? Katelyn!" He whispered, waving a hand in front of my face. "You're spacing out again. You see what I mean? This is why I'm so worried."

"Don't worry," I half-lied. "I'm fine...just....stressed."

We finished eating and put the plates aside. I took a deep breath and let the overwhelming sense of sleep take over my body. Travis was already sleeping with his arm around me. I closed my eyes, trying to forget about everything.

I tried, but I couldn't. I couldn't. And I almost lost myself.

The armor clanging......The door.....

Was this another flashback from when my mom was alive?

No.

This is real. It's happening. They've arrived.

((A/N: So sorry for not updating. Life has been crazy for me, but I'll try my best to update more often. I never expected this story to reach so many views, so I planned this to be pretty short. There will be one last chapter, and then an epilogue. I'll try to get the sequel out ASAP as well.
Again, sorry for lack of updates. Enjoy!))
