Ace's dreams and hopes were being shattered one by one, every single second he spend down here.
He never imagined that Teach- no, Balckbeard would be this powerful. He was careless and let his guard down and as a result, he lost his freedom and soon, he will lose his very life.
The thought of dying didn't scared him, he was ready to die at this point but he couldn't. He just couldn't leave his little brother and his lover behind like it was nothing. He loved them both will all his heart.
But time passed and the execution was getting closer and closer and the thoughts of being saved from here or escaping were starting to fade. He was inside Impel Down, the World's Government maximum-security prison and not to mention, he was being held as prisoner inside level 6 out of all the levels. Escaping this place was impossible for him.
He was chained and completely humiliated. He just wanted to end it all at this point. But he couldn't. He had to keep on fighting, for you... For Luffy... For everybody.
He didn't ate or sleep for days. All he did was just to stare at the ground and keeping on wishing this will be over soon.
He didn't spend a long time being alone in the cell. He almost chuckled when he saw who he had to share the cell with. The Knight of the Sea, Jimbei. The two were once enemies. Their fight lasted five days before they collapsed.
"To think that the two of us will end up like this." Jimbei said as he looked at the ceiling. "Quite ironic, isn't it? They even placed us in the same cell." Ace said amused. "They're just making fun of us now." He continued in a low tone. "So how did you end up here?" Jimbei looked at Ace and chuckled. "I didn't agreed to help them with the war." He answered.
"War? What war?" Ace asked confused. How much time did he spend down here? "Capturing you meant declaring war on Whitebeard. They're fools for thinking that they're ready to take this man head on. Unlike them, I don't have a death wish and plus, I don't intend to fight a friend."
And so days passed just like this. He didn't sleep nor eat, he would talk to Jimbei about the old times when both of them were free. And just like that, the day of his execution was approaching. He hated the fact that his father wanted to come all the way here to save him. He doesn't want to live if it means killing in the process people he cared about.
But if there was one wish... If he was allowed to have just one last wish, he wanted to see his brother become the Pirate King and to see (Name) again. He hated himself for promising something that he couldn't keep.
He knew that he was running out of time. He knew that once he leaves this place, he will never come back, either he lives or not.
On that same night, someone, who he really didn't expected to see, gave him a visit. This man was the very first person who he ever considered family, but he wasn't sure if the feeling was mutual anymore.
"Oh no... This is a horrible sight. Are you still breathing?" The old man asked as he looked at him. Ace looked into Garp's eyes. He wished he could read people as more easily. Garp sat down ans sighed as he continued to look at Ace.
"You came all the way over here to get me out?" Ace joked. Garp chuckled. "If it would be my way... But nobody can stop this now."
Ace wanted to cry. He never would've imagined seeing Garp today. "I wanted you and Luffy to become great pirates. Nevermind marines, you two brothers have become notorious outlaws. I'm sure you've heard the rumors about Luffy, too. In Water 7, he picked a fight with the World Government and somehow managed to invade the Island of Law, Enies Lobby. I shot over there and gave him a taste of the old man's Fist of Love! Doesn't seem to have helped one bit, though. After that, he caused a huge uproar on the Sabaody Archipelago. I'd expect no less from my own grandson!" Garp laughed.
Ace smiled at the sound of Garp's laugh, but also at the thought of Luffy. He expected no less from him.
"Oh, yeah... I also told Luffy about his father. He was really surprised to hear he had a father."
Ace chuckled. "Doesn't matter... Whether we know about it or not, as annoying as it is, both me and Luffy carry the blood of a world renowned criminal. There's no way we could've ever been marines. Even though I owe my mother a debt of gratitude and took the name 'Portgas' but I still can't stand the thought that I carry the blood of that worthless father of mine. I don't remember him at all, and I don't owe him anything."
"Yeah, I get what you mean, but he was just-" Garp started but he was cut off by Ace. "That's why, Gramps, my old man is Whitebeard. And no one else." Ace smirked.
Garp continued to look at Ace's face. He hated the fact that Ace didn't understood his father's motives. He knew that he's just stubborn, he just wished that he would be able to understand one day.
"I've heard you got yourself a lady." Garp said out of the blue. He was surprised when Ace gave him the biggest smile he ever saw from him and laughed. "Haha yeah. (Name)... She is one of the less people that showed me what love truly looks like." Ace chuckled.
"She was the one that turned me into a man, and in the end, as gratitude... I'm going to die."
I love you... But I'm sorry.
