Sorrel immediately dashed off through the mountains and I broke into a run. This isn't normal at all! She's being controlled...I said to myself with anger pulsing through my veins.
Sorrel was too fast! She was using her powers that even my quickened speed couldn't match. I then saw Shrew come by my side as I tried my best to follow Sorrel's tracks. "Try and catch up to her!" I told him urgently and he nodded in response.
While Shrew slowly and slowly gained speed and went ahead of me, I used my powers to try and sense Sorrel's location. An image then formed in my brain as I ran; Sorrel was heading towards the cave, which didn't have anyone there except...oh no.
"Bracken!" I exclaimed and pushed myself harder. If Sorrel gets to Bracken and she does what she said, the moment she gains control over herself...I forced myself not to think of what would happen. I ran so fast tears formed in my eyes but I didn't dare stop for a breath.
This was more important.
"Sorrel what are you–Ah!" I heard Bracken's voice over the other side of the mountain. I was almost there! I turned at the corner and my eyes immediately darted towards the fight. Sorrel was pressing Bracken's forcefield downward, trying to weaken the shield, and Shrew was seen being held on the side of a mountain. Vines had grown beneath him and kept Shrew in place as he tried to break through, so his efforts were in vain.
Shrew's face was scrunched up as he tried to break through, but he took one glance at me as I took a step forward to help him. "STOP!" He yelled, "They'll get you too!" I wanted to stop, turn around and try to help Bracken, but it was too late. I had come too close to the vines and they were soon wrapping around my ankles and wrists. I then joined Shrew in the struggle to break free.
"Why are you doing this?!" I heard Bracken's cry, bringing back my focus back on the battle. "I told you I would find and kill you when the time comes, didn't I?" Sorrel said slyly with a smile on her face, a flash of recognition came across Bracken's eyes. "Well, the time has come." A rush of power was brought on the forcefield and it broke into pieces, disappearing in an instant. Sorrel lunged for Bracken with a long, sharp dagger that seemed to have appeared out of nowhere, but I heard the sound of metal against metal when I saw the blur of motion.
It was the dagger! Bracken had a dagger in his hand that I had given him when I had talked with him in the forest. The dagger was blocking Sorrel's attack, but it wouldn't hold forever. "Listen to me Sorrel, I know you're not like this. I knew this was coming, but I never knew...I never knew it would hurt so much to see you like this." Bracken said, looking straight at Sorrel,"But just I want to let you know that I care about you and I forgive you." For a moment, Sorrel froze, and I saw a glint of the real Sorrel pass through her eyes.
But that was gone in an instant.
"Too late." I heard Sorrel say after the dagger that Bracken held was flown into the air and another was plunged straight into his heart. At that moment, all was silent. Until Sorrel blinked a few times, and I saw the real Sorrel come back.
Sorrel stared at what had just happened, completely dumbfounded, "W-what?" She asked quietly in shock. The vines that held Shrew and I loosened, and I fell to the ground. Sorrel let go of the dagger that killed Bracken and she stared at her hands. "What have I done?" Sorrel said in anguish and despair.
"Sorrel..." I tried to say to her, but my voice was hoarse after trying to break free. She didn't take any notice of anything around her, instead just staring at her partner, lying on the ground, lifeless.
Finally, she turned around and looked at Shrew and I. Her gaze filled with more pain when she looked at us. "Did I do this to you, too? " She said, tears forming in her eyes. I looked at myself; my hair was all messy and dusted with dirt, my wrist and ankles were bruised, but I wasn't bleeding or anything. What's gotten her so worried about us? I followed Sorrel's gaze to Shrew and I gasped. Shrew wasn't standing with his knees to the ground, his hair also dusted and dirty, but that wasn't the worst of it.
Deep scratches of blood were on his ankles and wrists, like he was being held back by animals instead of vines. I ran to him, wincing from the pain, and lifted his head up.
"What happened!?" I couldn't stop the fear coming out of my voice as I said the words. Shrew coughed, his voice hoarse just like mine, "The vines grew thorns when it figured out I was breaking through." He didn't have to say anything more, I started bandaging him to stop the breeding but I knew it was too late.
"Thanks," Shrew coughed, " For trying, Leaf." I could already feel Shrew's spirit drifting away, but he did one last thing. He leaned towards me and gave one last kiss.
"Goodbye." He said and when his body fell limp I knew he was gone.
I gently layed his body on the ground, keeping him in peace, and I stared at the ground. I looked at Sorrel, who was just as horrified as I was. It was so hard not to blame her, I didn't want to blame her. Because it really wasn't her fault.
"It's not your fault they died." I said, trying to tell Sorrel and my own self that, but tears streamed out of her eyes and she shook her head. "It is." She said quietly.
"Wait! Sorrel don't leave!" I called as she started to zoom out of these mountains to be alone. "It's my–" I was silenced by the sound of something fast hitting something solid. Sorrel had stopped running, and she immediately collapsed on the ground.
"SORREL!" I screamed and ran towards her. Too late. I heard a voice inside of me say with a hint of satisfaction. I knelt down Sorrel's body and saw a dart shot into her neck. Her face was frozen in a look of shock, but she wasn't breathing.
"Goodbye my friend," I said sadly, I closed Sorrel's eyes and put her in a position as if she were asleep.
"Goodbye. "
